  • Just checking - are you referring to the D1000 lock?

    Wow, that's serious

  • He clarified further above it was their biggest chain, not the angle-grinder-proof dlock!

Stolen from Loughborough Junction last night. Pretty sure it will be one of a handful in the UK so if you see anything like it let me know.

Its not the exact model shown, difference would be orange logo's, a chain over a belt drive, netting on the rack, suspension seat post and two distinctive Yellow stickers. Possible it still has the ring lock on the front wheel and might have been dumped as a result. Will also have a kryptonite bike lock locked to the rack.

    Thanks

  • Reports of more cyclists being jumped by motorcyclists in North London

  • The Archway one makes you suspect that it may be the same perpetrators as before. There may now also be copycat crime, i.e. through the reporting it's become known how much some of these road bikes are worth and more potential robbers have seen it as something they could do.

The history is that such crime sprees can go on for months, with the same pattern repeated over and over, until the police manage to get a grip on it. Let's hope history doesn't repeat here. Also, that nobody is injured or worse.

  • Is there a separate threat for these aggravated robberies? Definitely feels like a step up

  • Survey being conducted by a grouping of cycling clubs to assess impact on people's cycling of recent muggings of people on bikes. Don't have to be a member of cycling club to complete. Needs to be done today!

It will be live-streamed on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@appgcw/streams
    – where it will also be archived, along with previous APPGCW webinars.

    • Titus Halliwell, from the Metropolitan Police
    • Jane Sherry, from London Borough of Waltham Forest
    • James Brown, from BikeRegister
    • David Hibbs, from the Cycle Rail Working Group.
  • Hello all! Found my stolen bike on FB Marketplace. Looks like it’s been sold to a fence. Any ideas as to how to get it back?

  • I deal with stolen bikes at work (bike subscription company) - sadly I think the only way to really get it back is to set up a "buy" and go and get it yourself. The police aren't interested, we've tried a couple of bike recovery services that weren't very effective as well. It's probably not particularly safe to do though so it depends on how willing you are to put yourself in danger for a bike and/or how hard your mates are!

I was in contact with a company called BackPedal who were really communicative and helpful but didn't actually manage to get any of our bikes back. By the time they'd arranged to "buy" the bike, they'd all been sold already. Might be worth a punt if you're in London and don't fancy having a go yourself though!

  • I suggest you get police involved: the helped my friend and assisted when "buying" the bike back

  • Have you had to use BackPedal’s gps and retrieval service?

  • I haven't. When I was speaking to them they said that they were going to focus on that because their success rate was so much higher though! A GPS tracker seems like the way to go if you do have a bike that's particularly valuable or at high risk of theft.

  • Yeah I use the GPs they provided for non electric bikes. They have a bundled insurance provider now too so if they don’t / can’t retrieve you can claim

  • That's good to know. Seems really worthwhile!

  • This a sprayed ti?

  • No, its a mixture of parts.

  • Heard in a bike shop today--four people came in today because their cockpits had been taken off the bikes, cables snipped; all alloy road bikes less than ten years old, three in Hackney Central and one at Liverpool Street. Hope it hasn't happened to anyone on here.

  • Carrera Subway 1 (XL frame) stolen from outside Clapham High Street station today - not a particularly expensive bike but posting here in the off chance anyone sees one around. Sad times

  • Sorry to hear that. It happened to a mate of mine 25 years ago. Where was hers taken?

For years, it was a rare theft pattern; it seemed as if there was just one person going around nicking cockpits, mostly in Central London, but I hadn't heard about it for years. With so many in so short a space of time, it looks as if it's resumed, probably with new perpetrators.

  • It's increasingly common, lots of cases of bikes being done in after left for an hour or so.
