I deal with stolen bikes at work (bike subscription company) - sadly I think the only way to really get it back is to set up a "buy" and go and get it yourself. The police aren't interested, we've tried a couple of bike recovery services that weren't very effective as well. It's probably not particularly safe to do though so it depends on how willing you are to put yourself in danger for a bike and/or how hard your mates are!
I was in contact with a company called BackPedal who were really communicative and helpful but didn't actually manage to get any of our bikes back. By the time they'd arranged to "buy" the bike, they'd all been sold already. Might be worth a punt if you're in London and don't fancy having a go yourself though!
I haven't. When I was speaking to them they said that they were going to focus on that because their success rate was so much higher though! A GPS tracker seems like the way to go if you do have a bike that's particularly valuable or at high risk of theft.
