  • How the new (to me) Day One is looking so far. I've spent far more time/effort/money fucking about with cranks than I'd imagined. The spider of my Omniums wouldn't clear the chain stay. I thought I'd fuck about and try and get the repaired 105s from under the bed to work so I ordered a 110BCD 3/32 chainring. That arrived today and I immediately realised I wasn't paying attention, the cranks are 4 bolt and the ring is 5 bolt. Looks like I'll have to swap the 5 bolt Dura Ace on my road bike for the 105 and see if that works. It would have been so much cheaper/easier/better to just buy some secondhand track cranks that fit but here we are.

  • Why this over the Pomp? Word of warning 4x110 rings don't often come up cheap but i did score a Wolftooth for a reasonable amount recently. If you struggle to sort the cranks quickly give me a shout as i've probably got something you can borrow in the interim.

  • Looks great. Nice and ratty.
I’d be tempted to get some 5 bolt 110bcd road double cranks - so much easier getting chainline sorted!

  • Couple of minor niggles with the Pomp. It's very slightly too small, this will take bigger tyres and will fit my frame bag! I'm going to hold on to the pomp for a bit and see if I actually prefer this or not. To be honest, I just like a project, haha.
Yeah 4x110 in 3/32 in particular seem pretty hard to come by. The 5x110 will fit my 15 year old, dented Dura Ace cranks though so will see how that works. Thanks for the offer though!

  • Thanks! Yeah that's where the DA cranks come in. If that doesn't work out I'll just borrow the track cranks from my girlfriend's bike which is just gathering dust anyway. Then if I like the bike I'll maybe sell the Omniums and get something that'll fit properly.

  • Ah, gotcha. If the DA cranks use the same BB as 600 tricolour cranks, I can tell you exactly which length BB you need, if that helps!

  • They're Hollowtech rather than square taper so no room to adjust the BB really. Thanks for the offer though! I mocked it up using the DA cranks and the BB on my road bike and with a bit of eyeballing it looked like the chainline should be pretty good. Fingers crossed! Worst case scenario, I'll have a spare BB for my road bike and a really niche chainring to look at, haha.

  • You can always get 1mm chainring shims

  • Yeah that'd work if it's as close as my extremely inexpert eye suggests.

  • Getting there, slowly

  • Nice. The rear light cable routing is equal parts neat and sketchy, love it.

  • ta!

@kjlem - sure, there are plenty available.. but i’d rather sell it and leave something for the next owner :) need the funds, need the space, lost interest after 10 years

  • Just picked this up. Bought for winter duties but the more I look at it the more I think it deserves better. Almost no information out there about the brand/maker (a 10-year-old query apiece on here and Retrobike) but it’s a lovely frame with some great flourishes. Might even do a thread…

  • I got sick of having a wet ass and feet all the time so I added guards to my commuter. (Still need to trim the stays)
Thanks @rhb for the seattube mounting inspiration.

  • That is a big yes from me.

  • No worries and looking great!

  • New 7700 WS

  • I went with the 46t cassettr. And it’s finally put together. Cant seem to get the gearing working correctly though.

It drops the chain while backpedaling on the 46t.

I measured chainline to 48mm and since then moved the front ring inside the spider.

Any suggestions how to get it working flawlessly?

  • It drops the chain while backpedaling on the 46t

    Well, don't do that then

  • Exactly what I told my wife who use the bike.

I was just wondering if someone knew if something could be done to help it.

Looking at the chains interaction with the 46, the fact that it drops comes as no surprise.

But since dinner plates are common on mtbs I was curious if this is what one always would expect from a setup like this.

  • Recently replaced the 20+ year old drivetrain on my commuter/tourer with a spa cycles triple, 11-34 cassette and new derailleur. V pleased with it.

Final thing to sort out is the brakes. I've never been able to get good performance out of them and commuting in the rain recently has made an upgrade feel a bit more urgent... Is there any sense in swapping these for a new set of Tektro CR710s (the only affordable but decently reviewed cantis I can find online)? Or are there another forum-approved canti brakes I should be looking out for? Or should I just try and service these and accept that my spannering is the issue and not the brakes?

  • I like those cranks a lot! Got them on 2 bikes :-)

  • I have a few sets of brand new canti brakes siting in the garage.

    2 x Deore XT
    1 x Avid Shorty 4
    1 x Shimano BR-550

Let me know if any are of interest
