  • Right, I've got a recurring issue that's bothering with me on my S6L with the derailleur shifter.

Some time back I got rid of the stock (pre-2017) 2s shifter as it kept shifting when I went over something rough, and am running a remote lockout switch instead. It's been fine, mostly.

However, the last time I self-serviced or cleaned my bike (or might have just fixed a puncture) I noticed that shifting into the big sprocket was a struggle. Everything seemed fine - the dog-leg wasn't overly tight and the cable was new and moving freely. I just had to tighten the chain tensioner as it was a bit lose - problem solved.

I'm in that same scenario again after cleaning my bike. Yet I've made sure not to make the same mistake of having play in my chain tensioner. Shifting into the lower cog is worse than it's ever been. Two things I've noticed though:

    1. If I add cable tension at the barrel adjuster, shifting improves, but the adjuster is out quite considerably, so I'm considering getting new cables as I'm due anyway.
    2. The only thing that I've change is to revert back to my 13t/16t cassette, which isn't badly worn but did see more usage than newer 12t/16t that was sold to me buy mistake and has been on the bike. I much prefer the slightly lower gearing though.

Any tips before I take a look at this again tonight? I'm gonna inspect and maybe swap the inner gear cable or just add tension on the existing one, but not at the barrel adjuster this time.

  • There's a small hex bolt on the part which is located on the chain stay. Loosen that off, slide it along and clean out any crap which is in there then reassemble. Usually rectifies any shifting issues.

  • Already cleaned, and relubed and it was moving pretty freely, but will check again.

@Jackytwoshoes, you can normally buy kits where cables are cut to the right length, but a few times shops have given me the wrong ones, as there are quite a few (e.g. all the different bar shapes, pre and post 2017 shifters and brakes).

I'm going to cut my own too. TheBromptonMan has a table of the lengths you need: https://www.thebromptonman.com/cable-lengths.html#/

  • Gave this some overdue attention yesterday. It doesn't help that I'm using the remote shock lever complete with a Ti cable retaining nut to clamp the cable as it exits the derailleur - makes it trickier to work with with just your two hands, but not impossible.

I replaced the inner cable - wasn't necessary but due a service soon, took about the derailleur/dog leg assembly and my God was it filthy - in a fairly short space of time with a fair few poor weather rides and it was caked in grime. This wasn't the fix/cause though but clearly wasn't helping.

Iturns out one of my pulley/tensioner wheels is sitting on quite an eroded arm, and so wasn't moving freely enough to jump into the big cog. Given the recent clean, I clearly didn't re-lube it enough, but with some thicker lube it's now moving well and shifting.

Time to chuck out this chain tensioner though. I've used the same one for like 8+ years.
