  • the air is circulated and filtered in a plane

I remember hearing about a documentary that was meant to come out in March 2000 where an airline industry insider uncovered the outsized incidence of cancer and chronic respiratory ailments among airline crews due to exposure to hydrocarbons. Iirc, they said the air is circulated through the engines and filtered, but the exhaust and grease off-gassing traces from the engine aren’t removed. I recall an interviewer and the documentary producer agreeing it was a very common airplane smell, ‘like dirty socks’.

  • Really? Sounds a bit over the top, no?

When I flew to India ages ago they "sanitized" the cabin by opening spray cans with whatever "cleaning stuff" in. Smelled like bathroom detergent. I can't see that being a good thing to inhale on a regular basis
