  • Interesting, not terrible but also obscene. Classic grand designs character there. Boyish / bullish / kid in a candy store - made an awful lot of money somehow - now its playtime fella + rolly eye wife .

  • Really enjoyed last weeks - Lucinda Leech wooden house in Herefordshire. That's how it should be done - fairly modest, limited budget, sustainably built, creative, bedraggled children pitching in and a homemade railway track.

  • They should do something useful with it and turn it into a primary school or a data centre powered off the roof. Far too big to live in enjoyably.

  • Presumably it was rolly eye wife's money, if she was the divorce lawyer for Roman Abramovich and Bernie Ecclestone's exes

thought it was an impressive project, but apart from the living room with the big windows then it didn't have much charm to it

  • Looks like an information center for a nature reserve

  • From the memes thread

  • I went and had a look at the ‘Shed’ that’s being built nearby. It’s really coming together. Still really liking the roof, but it’s got hidden down pipes, now from experience, that’s asking for trouble.

  • RE: this week’s Grand Designs, I just can’t get over how absolutely massive it was - 800sqm for two people..?! bonkers!

also is it me, or are more and more of the episodes are ending with unfinished houses?
bit of a shame really, but suppose they have to get X number of episodes out a year or something.

  • also is it me, or are more and more of the episodes are ending with unfinished houses?

seems that way. Maybe a bunch of covid hit builds so everything's backed up a year or two? Next week looks like it's a rehash of a previous programme too though :/

  • Channel 4 have dropped house of the year this year too :/

  • I cant stand it

Im assuming its so in 2 years they can do a freebie ‘revisit’ episode but it makes watching them so unsatisfying

  • Ok this is the first one I've watched where I think they have done a really good job. Not jealous at all.

  • I'm calling vulgar.

    Outside entertaining area
    Swimming pool
    Carp
    No grass
    Glazed gable end

  • Rolls Royce in the carport.
    Are they celebrities?

  • I watch these to get some ideas and find budget ways of doing it.

Now I need hidden speakers... https://www.k-array.com/en/products/line/lyzard

  • How the hell does a young couple afford that?

  • They’re probably successful and want to spend their money on a house they like

  • True I’m just nosey as to how people get their money. Hard work/ luck / inheritance etc

  • After a bit of internet sleuthing, mainly out of jealousy, he’s 37, she’s 30 - they’ve been listed as directors of various businesses on Companies House, including a van dealership, property developer, and a glamping-style cabin/hut manufacturer.

  • They didn't get avocado on toast and saved up, I mean... Obviously

  • I always wonder why people with money have programs like this made of their house. A lot of Grand Designs is people in the trade doing a bit of promo for their business/concept - that makes sense. At the lower end you can sometimes get some savings from your suppliers.

But in cases like this I'd just be worried about home invasions. They even have the layout of your house.

  • Tbh I find it interesting and am always curious. From my anecdata these are the <40yo self-made money categories:

    • Bankers from money who've made sound investments
    • Bankers who've lucked out on tech startups
    • Crypto platform
    • football
    • sales
    • recruitment
    • dodgy property developer (not so wealthy now and possibly heading to jail)
  • recruitment

My cousin started a recruitment company years ago. It is insane how rich he is now.

  • It's mental isn't it. When I first meet my OH one of their mates husbands was drawing £30k p/m from his company in salary (so I assume more in other extraction methods).

Yet they still set up a parallel business to start cutting out their business partner 😂

Fwiw my point about home invasion wasn't made up. The dodgy property developer's business partner had one.
