  • I've been working my way through last years Lidl fancylad bottling.
19yo Islay, lovely smoke on the nose but quite delicate on the pallet (certainly not a rebadged laphroiag)

  • Back to the Lagavulin 16.
Really enjoying the Port Charlotte, but boyo that 16 rules the roost.

  • Agreed, it's lovely stuff.

  • Went ahead and bought a bottle of Ardbeg’s recent limited release BizzareBBQ. First of all, it’s not really limited as there are still plenty bottle on the market, and limited Ardbegs usually disappear in a matter of hours.
Second, it’s very smoky, peaty, a bit tarry (like all Ardbeg) mostly savoury but mildly toffee/vanilla. Nice dram. Not worth the €€.

  • Woodford Rye and a bonfire.

Should really be on an Islay, but I like to jazz it up.

    Happy Sunday folks

  • Definitely should be an Islay, but always love the one you're with.
Is that one of those smokeless burners? Are they truly so?

  • Got some Hibiki Harmony Master's Select from Zurich airport this weekend for £80. I got it mainly as I had some currency left. As a non age statement it's not likely to be worth a lot more in future is it?

Would like to drink it without worrying it'll be silly money in 2 years.

  • "smokeless" it is not. (although claims to be)

it is "invisible" smoke, you cant really see it once it gets going, but you can smell it, and have that (wonderful) bonfire aroma on all your clothes, hair and skin.

Less smoky than a regular bonfire, due its propaganda air circulation, plenty of guff on the Solo Stove website telling you how it is smokeless.
(I bought it in lockdown in a fit of pique, don't regret it, but it wasn't cheap considering it is a glorified washing machine drum)

  • The value of Japanese whisky has no basis on reality, so never say never, but I don't think you have anything to worry about.

You'll probably find it on sale for a couple of hundred quid because it's Japanese and people are idiots but it's not going to be worth megabucks.

  • Thanks! Real world experience appreciated.

  • Recommended. Picked this up for around £35 a couple of months back.

  • Currently in Japan and had an opportunity to try Yamazaki NAS and Nikka Miyagikyo NAS. Both correct, though mellow and you count taste youthness in them. There’s a chance I’ll be touring Kanosuke distillery in two days and taste whiskies for smaller distilleries/brands.

I’m also surprised how cheap scotch is here. Saw Ardbeg Corryvrecken for 60£. Also was able to find Laphroaig triple wood for even less. And it was discontinued what, 2 years ago?

For now going to stick with age stated scotch, it’s not cheap but definitely good taste and quality.

  • Miyagikyo retails here for 25£ which I think is adequate.

  • Recently picked up a bottle of Adnams Rye whiskey, did a side by side last night with Woodford Rye
Adnams is much better, and I was a big fan of the Woodford when I bought it.

  • I thought Bunnahabhain got really spendy? Guess it was something else.. anyway, got spammed, figured I'd share in case this was good...

  • It's mainly the diageo brands that have got stupid spenny, repositioned everything to be in the 'premium' category.

  • Their office is down the road. Maybe I should go dumpster diving...

  • Master of Malt are giving away freebies with every order from now until Christmas. Could be a 30ml dram, a discount, your order refunded or a whole bottle. Had a mate already get a free bottle in his order.

  • Do Master of Malt do any kind of satisfaction guarantee? I got three of those “3 for 2” malts from their recent unsolicited spam, but the Bunnahabhain is horrible. I normally like Islay malts but this one has a really unpleasant burned rubber latex taste. I really don’t like it.

  • The 12? I really liked that. I do spend a lot of time destroying tyres though. #burnrubber

  • It’s rough at first, but with time gets mellower and really tasty.

Back looking into whisky casks, and I found the above.
Have queried regarding on-costs, pending response.

Tl;Dr: £3300 buys 1/15th of 10 casks, each year you receive 1/15th of the bottling (between 15 and 22 bottles, depending on the size of the barrel)

If it is just a one-off fee, I am very tempted, shit maths make it about £22 bottle, but that seems too cheap.
Also, I am unlikely to want 15 bottle of scotch each year, so would be looking to move some of these on to friends and family (read: you cunts) every year, or perhaps go in with 1 or 2 people to lighten the load.
Once I have some more info I am happy to share it on here if anyone else is interested (either going halfsies or just generally interested)

  • 15 bottles a year is only 1 and a bit a month.

  • I mean. I don't have a problem.
