While I'm here, is there any reason not to use a spray can for base coating? So spray primer > spray base coat (yellow, or blue or whatever) > wash > details yada yada?

the main problem might be the thickness of the spray, it's very easy to get to lose some details. But there's a reason the primer sprays are coloured, just use the one that matches the base colour you want.
