  • respectfully, darts were a sketchy easy to puncture front-only tyre (paired with smokes rear) in 1996, i shouldn’t think they have improved unless reissued and redesigned . there’s a reason mint sauce ran smokes front as well as back.

  • the'ye from 2009, they're re-issued - surely enough to get me riding the bike.

at least enough to convince me that i should give the bike shop ££££££ to bother installing some nicer tubeless tyres before the upcoming [REDACTED] next year with [REDACTED] where we hope to be doing [REDACTED]

  • lol

  • Ah no that's not me never.

  • Note to those who struggle with tyres, if you’ve bought wheels used, so check the previous owner hadn’t done a matryoshka doll of rim tape

    Shit was so rancid

Anyway, non tubeless tyres now fit with just me thumbs

Got a nice thin layer of rim tape on now, high tech

    (Electrical tape)

  • I did say this a while back.

  • woop! On with the build!!

  • Wohoo! Nice tyres. Gonna suit the bike really well

  • Only thing with electrical tape is it's quite soft and loses its stickiness so you may find in the future it moves a little bit and exposes sharp spoke holes. Keep an eye on it

  • This^ Not a great solution

I found the pressure pushed and stretched /thinned the tape into each hole, leaving the edge of the spoke hole sharp enough to cause punctures

  • there’s a reason mint sauce ran smokes front as well as back.

I got this old person's reference. Now Onza Octopus, that was a classic 90s tyre. Still never surpassed for grip on wet surfaces.

  • Can you show us which other parts you have collected for this build? I lost track
    Edit: found it

  • I was going to build a bike around that panda stem :(

  • I have a set of Ritchey 20mm rim tapes I need to send back to SJS, you can have if you want (and if they are wide enough)

  • having used electrical tape before it just needs to last long enough to get me motivated by having the wheels set up tubeless - although as the tyres need to be non tubeless i will likely have to try it first with local tubeless whisperer/ propagandist @Belagerent

hope i didn't throw those tubeless valves out...

luckily the one kind thing you can say about these stans rims is they're quite well made so the spoke holes/ rim bed is very smooth. i will be throwing the roll of tape in one of my many bike bags for good measure tho.

  • I look forward to spending 6 hours cycling 30km with you due to frequent puncture repair caused by tape slippage. Good thing that the tyres come off the rims easily.

  • look it just has to last from my house to tottenham, then cambridge south to yours

  • right i put it off long enough, i ordered the tool, i'll fit the headset and hopefully build this bike this weekend inshallah

  • i have secured the parts - now it's a test of my weedy arms if i can set the crown race

  • This whole thread has "building a neo retro 26 inch bike GOES WRONG" energy.

  • I CANNOT GET THIS CROWN RACE ON

    MY ARMS ARE SO SMALL

ITS SO LOUD TO KEEP WAILING ON IT

WHEN WILL I HAVE A RIDABLE BIKE

  • CK stuff is hard to get on, I once struggled, then just put loads of grease and hammered it down with a screw driver, didnt die

  • At the Artisinal framebuilding workshop I worked at for the last couple of years, we put the crown race setting tool over the steerer, turned the whole fork upside down and whacked it against a concrete floor. Never failed. The Earth is a pretty big hammer it turns out.

  • i will try this, thank you
