When performative piety becomes a substitute for truly virtuous living, a necessary part of the performance is to denigrate anybody who points out the gulf between the performer's words and his actions.
When the fash start throwing accusations of virtue signalling around, you know they've lost the argument. It means "we know you're right but please shut up about it because it makes us feel uncomfortable"
