Tesla can't be the first people to thing - "what if we made the panels incredibly strong". I assume also that it's probably not done for decent reasons - what are the downsides to doing it?
Old cars used to have ridged panels in comparison to modern cars, look at crash test footage to see what happens to a driver of a car with crumple zones compared to a ridged box.
