• Thanks man, not the news I was hoping for and will most likely mark my first and last attempt at anything resembling 'bangernomics'. It is a 2010 mk6 golf automatic with 100k on the clock, bought with assistance of a mechanic and the intention was to run it for a year whilst my wife learns to drive (she wanted to practice in a smaller car like her instructors) then sell on for a similar price before buying a bigger car (if you ever visit the dog page, you'll appreciate why this is necessary). Open to anyone's input but my guess is it won't be worth looking to replace the engine in a car I paid £3k for and which is far from pristine in many other regards.

Any recommendations for mobile mechanics or local garages would be amazing. Similarly, if anyone's looking to move on an automatic I could potentially be interested.

Also, I may well have an android head unit to fit a mk6 golf for sale. It definitely didn't break my car 😶

  • We had this diagnosis with a RAV4, the AA said the timing belt had gone and it was scrap. garages wanted to charge a grand just to get to the valves to see if it was borked, then toyota finally confirmed it was a non interference engine, I changed the belt myself and it ran well enough to trade in.
So it might be gone, but equally worth checking.
