  • Audio technica 1200 copy is meant to be quite good.

im in the same postition got one 1200 and currently saving for a 2nd really want to put some mixes together.

  • Yeah I’d heard they were decent. The citronics are £150 for the pair plus a mixer though, which seems pretty hard to beat!

  • that is a v good price will you me scratching as the pick on them will be prettly slo but if your just mixing then i think they will be pretty solid

  • My scratching days are well behind me :-)
To be honest, I’m only really cutting and cross fading - not really beatmatching even. I imagine I could make do with pretty basic decks!

  • Aaaaand it's me again...

  • Was Dog a Doughnut? - Cat Stevens

Ha - this was in my 'out' pile and I whacked it on yesterday and snuck it back on the shelf :-D

  • I just recently discovered that track. It was one of those tracks I heard a million times before but never knew where to find it. I would have never thought to find it on a cat Stevens album and that there is chic corea playing on it.
Some more facts about the track: https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2015/09/cat-stevens-was-dog-a-doughnut-key-tracks

  • That was an interesting read, cheers (only just got round to following your link 😬)

It’s always felt like it inhabited a similar space to ‘Temporary Secretary’ by Paul McCartney and ‘Sample and Hold’ by Neil Young.

  • Some more advice please:

I appear to have a 2hr slot at a local bar. They seem keen to not stiff DJs/bands and they asked me how much I wanted - I have no idea!

My djing ‘career’, aside from ending about 10 years ago, was mainly either nights I organised myself or low-key playing for pints kind of thing. I did do a bit of playing at bars and being paid directly, but I can’t remember how much id get and also it was a while ago so I assume things have changed.

So how much should I expect to get? It’s not a city centre bar - think playing records at a pub, basically. Also this is Bristol, not world-famous London Town.

  • I'm considering purchasing a ddj rev1 for messing around with.
I know @J0nathan you had a ddj200 for a while, but can't remember what your current set up is?
I was considering recording some of my old vinyl onto my pc with audacity and then mixing the mps's on the ddj... or is that a silly idea?

  • I started doing this - albeit in a much more round-the-houses way. In the end I realised that I could find a lot of the stuff I wanted to rip on Spotify, and you can download playlists via various web apps. I’m sure the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, but for messing around with, it serves a purpose.

  • I was thinking more obscure stuff that's not on Spotify. it's something I should probably do anyway as my vinyl is mostly just collecting dust and has been for many years.
I think if I bought a controller it would encourage me to actually record stuff and might bring back the joy of DJing using records I bought XXyrs ago.
I'd love a pair of turntables, but have absolutely no space for a dedicated set up.
also, I'm guessing recording the vinyl would maybe make it sound a bit more authentic, even though it's digital?

  • I’m not sure what kind of thing you mean, but I was amazed (appalled?!) at the kind of thing that’s on Spotify now. Pretty much all of my Turkish psych stuff is on there, as is most of the European prog/psych stuff.

I’m not sure I could really get in to playing out digitally, though. I don’t think my brain works in the right way - I need the visual cues of the actual records to flick through!

  • Where in Bristol?

  • Glamorous fishponds 🫠

  • Post up the details if you get the gig

  • i guess 95% of the vinyl I've got probably is on Spotify, buy I've got some promo's, white labels, vinyl only remixes, weird electronica albums from labels that went out of business before music was released digitally, that sort of stuff.

the reason I'm drawn to the ddj rev-1 is the battle style layout, and the platters are a bit larger than the similarly priced controllers

good luck with the upcoming gig btw!

  • I went ddj200 > denon prime go > xdj700 + djm 450.

I’ve ripped a few records I couldn’t find anywhere, but you’ll be surprised how much is out there on beatport and bandcamp etc. was actually just preparing a load of tracks last night for the first time in a long while.

  • yes, I thought you'd gone quite pro with your setup.
since my last post I've been and picked up a rev-1 as they had one in stock at the local Argos 😬

  • I was amazed (appalled?!) at the kind of thing that’s on Spotify now

From what I can gather, Spotify is now incredibly easy to self publish on. So now you get fairly niche artists and independent labels uploading their entire back cats in one go. Subbase and Moving Shadow are some examples that I’d never have imagined being on there so comprehensively.

  • Edit - double post

  • Just picked up some Stanton str8 100s for cheap. They’ve clearly seen a bit of action but I’m hoping they’re still in decent shape. Only real concern is a 45rpm button that needs attention. Anyone know if thats an easy fix, wether DIY or fixy person?

  • @AlexD If you’re south london way… I’ve heard about Deck Dr. might be worth asking them if you don’t fancy fixing it yourself

  • Another vote for Deck Dr. He came to my house and overhauled my 1210s, including new, click-less pitch faders and LED pop-ups. They were like new.

  • I’m actually in Bristol. I found a guy local to me, but in the interests of not ending up spending as much as it would have cost to just buy the lovely PDX-a2s that I passed up, I might see if I can DIY.

The issue is with this micro switch - I have a mate who is better with a soldering iron than I, so I’m going to try and source a replacement and swap out.
