Thanks y'all - gives some hope! Left it charging overnight and came back to it feeling hotter than I'd expect, so the overheating thing rings true @grams . It's now in the fridge charging from a power bank so we'll see if that does anything
But yeah overall seems like an issue with getting sufficient charge into it for it to wake up, rather than a battery fault - reminds me of old iPods where you'd have to use Firewire charging to get them to wake up after sitting for years
