  • This is fucked. For many people the poppy is a simple symbol of remembrance for the dead. Poppy wearing is attacked by the left because it is perceived as right wing, but co-opting the Gaza genocide into this? So now if we see someone wearing a poppy they are somehow complicit? Shit stirring bullshit. Way to spread more hate around.

  • Genocide that is cracking you up at the moment.

  • Also grammatically terrible.

  • I agree with you but the long standing ‘poppy as symbol’ was already co-opted a few years ago

  • For this reason I am increasingly inclined towards a white poppy that attempts to move away from the (in some circles) jingoistic focus on British victims of war and towards remembrance of all those impacted by conflict, and advocacy for peace in general.

  • That ship sailed long ago, it's literally a symbol of the glorification of war beloved of flagshagging right wing cunts everywhere

  • Lol and all Corbyn supporters are antisemites and all social workers wear beads.

  • Agreed. Look at the bullshit that James McClean had to put up with from right wing football clowns for years, just because he chose not to wear one. It's a militaristic, imperialist symbol now, whatever people might say about it originally being something else. Time for it to go. A new idea is needed. What the fuck was WWI about, exactly, anyway, other than a load of officer class toffs sending thousands to die over nothing?

    Meme away, I say.

  • Although the poppy has been adopted as their own by abhorrent right wing shits we mustn't brand everyone who wears one as a nazi sympathiser. To millions, I am not one of them, it is a symbol of remembrance of all casualties of war, on both sides.

Incidentally, the 'lions led by donkeys' thing doesn't really stand up to analysis, although the majority of officers at the start of WW1 were indeed posh. The attrition of officers by death or wounding was higher than that for conscripts. This led to a surprisingly high rate of promotions from the ranks, purely because there were fewer of the privileged classes with military experience left to kill. Ultimately, a private rose through the ranks to become the commander of the British army.

Edit: by attrition rate I mean that if you joined as an officer you were more likely to die than if you were conscripted.

I guess that was down to actual training of the conscripts?

  • I guess that was down to actual training of the conscripts?

It was junior officers who got it worst. They didn't lack training, but they were often used as platoon or section leaders, so not only were they out front in the whole "run towards the machine guns and pray" thing, but they spent proportionately more time than the average solder on wire-cutting expeditions and such, in between. Six weeks life expectancy from the moment they arrived at the front.

    Exactly right, well put

  • Is it possibly certain symbols that are already in use for one purpose are reused in an antagonist way in the same arena.

  • Is it possible you move all this to the political discussions thread or something?

  • it is a symbol of remembrance of all casualties of war, on both sides

It's been weaponised however, and as such it's no longer acceptable IMO. If people really do need some form of nostalgia for people killed in war, then at least wear the white poppy.

Or you know, just reflect inwardly without the performative virtue signalling

  • Yes, poppies are used as a way to stir up hate by both the right, and the left, who react to it, spreading the hate in exactly the way the fash intended.

  • performative virtue signalling

virtue signalling is a good thing. Virtue is a good thing, and communicating virtue is also a good thing. This phrase was invented by the right and it's a self-own.

    It's been weaponised however

You cant see that you are also weaponising poppies?

  • Good point.

Nothing worse than those cunts who wear red ribbons or Live Strong wristbands.

And don't get me started on pricks lighting candles.

  • I mean you could say exactly the same about the swastika
