  • The problem is the police are super stretched now and stealing bikes really doesnt float there boat in catching the folk. Its all gearing up to people ganging up and fighting back as it cannot continue at this rate.

  • That's another issue, you challenge one of them and they hit there head even thought they are swinging at you with a hammer and your probs up for manslaughter.

I think if they had went for the leader there, the other 2 would have crumbled.

  • These kids in the video don't look very experienced or well prepared. Clearly not prepared to swing a hammer on a bystander which is a good thing really.

Wading in with a weapon would be over-reacting to this kind of crime although it's tempting.

  • I think if a 2 or 3 folk when for the main one, the shit would hit the fan with these wee guys. There is just not enough punishment and they basically know they won't get caught and if they do they will get a slap on the wrist.

  • They're richly deserving of a good, old-fashioned hiding, if not quite feeding to the pigs.

  • Wasn't that memorable. Was in my bike at a red light. Police man stopped me as I matched a description of a person they were looking for. Asked to confirm the description, basically I was wearing a dark hoodie. Nothing like the person they were looking for.

We had a discussion about fuzz searching me and if I had I'd. Said no. He insisted. I point out I'm carrying several blunt kitchen knives in my pannier. Knives are wrapped in tea towels and tied as they were going to be sharpened. They were blunt and chipped.

Got arrested and offered a caution which I turned down. Bad boy innit

  • That is vigilantism.

  • The idea is to find out why they commit crime.

Even if the police chase then, if they crash police are at fault. They are always little angels with Crim records and the police follow them.

  • State of the UK. Good on her.

  • It's really not worth it. Want to get stabbed just to protect a bike? No thanks.

  • There was the incident where a kid died running from the police on a stolen scooter and the family organised a mural in remembrance. I think there was some issue with vandalism of the mural. It's all pretty dissonant that a family would be 'he was such a nice kid, everyone liked him' when clearly he wasn't that nice to people who own motorbikes.

My own experience over many years has been that the police feel it's not a crime against a person and if you're well off enough to have a motorbike you can afford the cost of insurance and replacement. I don't think they don't care but they're too busy dealing with mental health issues.

  • You're right, even with half a dozen grown men around they would start to think about running. I've seen it myself when a group of residents on my street came out to stop a mugging. No one touched the perpetrator but he stood around like a rabbit in the headlights until the police arrived.

It's true about the punishment. When I did a tour of New Zealand and asked about security of the bikes we were riding the hire company told me not to worry, no-one would touch the bikes because they feared bikers. That threat has definitely gone in the UK.

  • No its not, if 2 or 3 random people in that situation when for one of them and say pinned him down maybe accidentally bashed his face off the ground while doing it and waited for the police.

If your the equaliser going round and finding them then id agree that's vigilantism.

  • Stabbed by a youth in a balaclava = Sorry sir, not enough evidence
Stomping on said youth = That will be 2 years for GBH and probably some payments for rehab

  • Someone comes at me with a hammer my fight or flight would probably make me run.
If my wife and/ or dog are there, I may try and make their knee bend the wrong way.
edit: the hammer wielding maniacs knee, not LadyDeth or Bosco knee.

  • If you are talking about whom I think you are talking about. There is more, family claimed that police victimised him by stopping him slot. The scotter he was on was a 300¿ when the plate on the bike said 125. On the bike were found a couple of hundred quid in cash.

Arsenal football team asked for justice....

  • What happened was a long conversation and asking for legal council.
Main points were I didn't match the person they were looking for. The knives were in a panier and I had an appointment to drop the knives off to be sharpened by nella.

Getting a caution would affect my getting a CRB check for some employment.

  • The one that bothers me is you stop at lights and someone pulls up next to you the guy on the back gets off brandishing a knife and demands your keys. What do you do?

  • Depends on what I am wearing;)

  • Yes, it will make a difference if you're feeling well armoured.

I'm guessing head off at high speed is the first option.

2nd option, toss the keys jump of the bike and lay it on the floor and then they have to decide to go for the keys and pick them up at which point they're vulnerable or try to get you to do it. Or just stab you and do it while you're dying.

  • Was a flippant comment, as I can only talk about me.

In the I'm Jack reacher yeah I'll kick their arses. Or reality that shock means you don't do anything.

There were stories of people turning up at house doors with guns to take motorbikes. London bikers forum I think and no idea how true as I never met the person involved

  • Another one was the fire extinguishers. A crew approach you on scooters, spray you with a fire extinguisher and mug you for the bike.

You're right about shock but that's why you need to have a plan!

  • There was a video a little while back of that kind of mugging. The guy pinned it to get away. Involved a sharp u-turn as I remember.
