You're right, even with half a dozen grown men around they would start to think about running. I've seen it myself when a group of residents on my street came out to stop a mugging. No one touched the perpetrator but he stood around like a rabbit in the headlights until the police arrived.
It's true about the punishment. When I did a tour of New Zealand and asked about security of the bikes we were riding the hire company told me not to worry, no-one would touch the bikes because they feared bikers. That threat has definitely gone in the UK.
These kids in the video don't look very experienced or well prepared. Clearly not prepared to swing a hammer on a bystander which is a good thing really.
Wading in with a weapon would be over-reacting to this kind of crime although it's tempting.
