I’m completely new to all this but have found through trial and error on a zombie hall that light layers and adding washes then repeating is working well for me as it means I can correct errors and general cack handedness as I go.
Did spray a prime coat on the models but painting one at time with good results so far. (By good, I mean I’m happy with the progress I’m making!)

That's interesting, I thought coming in to this that the wash would be the last thing you do, but to apply the wash and then add some base coat back on is interesting. Taking it one model at a time atm, not fussed for building an army, just want to keep improving.
