  • Thanks for that, that's really helpful. Yeah I did a base coat of black before adding the yellow, which I soon realised was a mistake and had to slap the yellow on to get good coverage. Lesson learned on that one.

  • Yeah yellow is a bit of a pig to paint, especially over black. Worth checking out this video for some good methods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwnFf-KlykI

If you want simple and straightforward then getting a yellow rattle can for priming is definitely the way to go, especially if you're doing an army of marines.

And in general if you're painting something where you need good coverage, generally many thin coats is better than slapping it on, will help to not obscure detail.

Also +1 to the stuff sumo has said.

  • Yellow is a bugger to get even coverage. I start with a red-brown (bugman's glow, I think) base - orange would work too, then a 50/50 mix with a yellow, then the yellow (or yellows if I want a lighter highlight).

I've used a brown wash (agrax eathshade) over this to take it down a notch for my reivers which have a darker theme that the main army to fit in with the idea that they are stealth troops. Then yellow again for highlights which I think works well - see WIP pic attached. I did a comparison against nuln oil and the brown wash looked much better.

With washes in general I find you sometimes have to put them on quite thick to get them into the recesses and then move the paint around over the flatter bits to get an even coat.

  • That's interesting, I thought coming in to this that the wash would be the last thing you do, but to apply the wash and then add some base coat back on is interesting. Taking it one model at a time atm, not fussed for building an army, just want to keep improving.

  • It was an experiment last night, I want them to look yellow to fit with the rest of the army but less bright to fit with the theme/lore. I think it works.

I could have used a yellow, orange or red (maybe) wash to get the effect I wanted but I don't have those!

I tend to think about building pigment with various layers to come up to the colour I want so washes are a bit counter-intuitive to me. It's all a learning curve and fun to experiment. I normally do one as a test before doing the rest of the squad so with these I did one nuln oil and one agrax earthshade so I could compare.

TBH I'm enjoying painting much more than I used to. Even got excited yesterday thinking about masking off some pack markings (they are Space Wolves) when I had the idea of using negative space to make the shape haha.

  • White Scars

I love the idea of a White Scars style force, fast moving hit and run tactics. With the new codex I can use existing models in the army without having to have them all painted up as WS (I have Space Wolves but only because that is what teenage me had). I think some outriders will be the next unit I get, but told myself I have to finish the combat patrol I got in Sept before I buy any more models!

  • I’m completely new to all this but have found through trial and error on a zombie hall that light layers and adding washes then repeating is working well for me as it means I can correct errors and general cack handedness as I go.

Did spray a prime coat on the models but painting one at time with good results so far. (By good, I mean I’m happy with the progress I’m making!)

  • Just heads to do on these guys,

I’m really happy with how the bases turned out, and the bolters.

Will need a break from this scheme, and marines in general when these heads are done but I’ll be enthusiastic to paint another 5 or 10 of these eventually I’m sure.

The colour scheme is really nice to paint,

    slap on some orangey brown
Slap on some lighter orangey brown to highlight centre panels
    Sepharim shade that bad boy
Pick out recesses with agrax, minimal precision needed
    Pick out the metallics
Do whatever you like on a bolter
Little skull colour on the shoulder armour
Little skull colour in any battle damage and lenses
    Little brown on any pouches
    Glaze nuln oil on metalics
Glaze Skelly hoard on the bone shoulder
Glaze frosty blue on battle damage and lenses
Haphazard splodges of metalics as battle damage
    Brown base
    Shade with agrax
Mix your brown paint and skull paint and dry brush it over being sure to get some on their feet

    Boom

Effective rusty muddy marines that you can paint while watching tv or hasan on twitch tv

  • Nice work, like the bases. They look rad with heads off tbh, you should have them as a headless ghost brigade.

  • These look great and was the kind of thing I was attempting.

In other news, found this guy on insta and really taken with his stuff: https://instagram.com/unwantedleg?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Lush! That candy red is (apparently) quite easy to achieve with some tamiya clear paints over metallics.

  • Nice! Love muddy marines.

  • Thank you for the kind words!

    They’re done!!!!

They looks so fun, when I put the heads on I was filled with energy to do the other 5 which are in the more unique poses.

So maybe I will base coat those later, they’re already primed after all….

  • That’s ace! How did you do the bases?

  • 5mm Cork coasters off Amazon, broken so there is only a smooth edge on the top and bottom, superglued on

I then cut out straight section of sprue and sanded the edges uneven, crating a hole in the cork wedged them in

Used modelling chain to drape over the post before supergluing it so it didn’t move

Placed some citidel skulls where I thought appropriate

All the empty bits of base and in the joints I covered with pva glue and then dipped it all in unfiltered sand, making sure to pva again and let dry

    I then primed

Used a mid brown all over, picking out the post in a darker brown, the chain in metalics, the skull in skull colour

Went all over the base in agrax earthshade, paying close attention to the recesses, letting it pool if needed

Then mixed the skull colour and mid brown together for a lighter tone and dry brushed everything including the models feet/ capes/ dangly bits

Some pictures of unfinished ones, I don’t recommend breaking the top like I did for the test model, it makes making the model look natural far too hard, leaving it flat and applying a little sand is a far better work flow

  • I feel like progress is being made. Definitely less slap-on paint.

  • I’ve been waiting for it to be on sale (finally finished Zelda), sweet, def want some of that. Cheers for the heads up.

  • The Full Beard Cup at Games workshop HQ was a success! Got my selfie with @benjam in front of the famous Land Raider.

Did much better than I expected, three draws and one loss. Nearly drew the loss, and very nearly won a game too, but I foolishly did a one die block with my Krox, which then KO’d himself for the rest of the match.

Great time, def looking for more games in future. And need to finish painting my Lizardmen, properly do the bases.
