Bringing a Gallium Pro back to life

  • In 2016, I bought an Argon 18 Gallium Pro frameset for what I think was a bargain at £700 from a guy in Belgium who had raced it for one season. Absolutely fell in love with it, and it fits me like no other bike I own. The only negative is that I didn't really like the paint, but that doesn't matter when you're having fun.

Unfortunately, during lockdown, my partner was riding it on the turbo (laziness on my part to not swap bikes) and somehow there was a chain drop. Whilst she was wearing headphones. She didn't notice for a few rotations and it caused some damage that was assessed and deemed fine to carry on riding. Fast forward to earlier this year, and whilst out on a fast group ride, I had an inexplicable chain drop and it caused some pretty catastrophic damage. I needed a bike and fast, so decided to get into 2022 and bought an aero frameset with disc brakes (Argon 18 Nitrogen). It's fast, and I've set some PBs, but I just don't love it. It's just not as fun to ride.

So, I've decided to get the frameset repaired and fully repainted. Unfortunately, I live outside of the UK and options are very limited in where I can get this done. Initially, I was going to have to mess around with expensive postage to the UK, but I found a local guy who is used by the more 'premium' LBSs and he gave me a quite reasonable quote for repair and respray. I went to look at some of his work, and it looks (to my untrained eye) very good, although not very creative/modern in terms of paint choices.

Starting this thread to make sure I get it built fairly quickly and to get some advice (particularly on the carbon repair/paint side of things).

    Happier times:

    Disaster:

  • Damage and repair so far. I don't really know what 'good' looks like here...

  • In terms of the new paint, I always loved the chromaflair look (love Kleins), but it seems to be everywhere at the moment, so maybe the moment has passed for that. I also always wanted a very stealth bike. I've tried to combine these two things into one, so have asked for the frame to be sprayed in matte black, with the decals and details in gloss black with Didspade Kosmos Supershift Flake. Hopefully, it will come out not too in-your-face but with a bit of something different! I first saw the flake on Kustom Flow's Instagram. I would love him to do the respray, but it just won't work logistically unfortunately.

  • sub'd as I'm also in need of some carbon repair and planning a DIY paintjob...

Did you see the Parlee that @hoops did a while back - stunning!

  • I remember that! Was very interested, but just too big for me.

Think it was one of the frames that made me want to get a respray...beautiful.

  • Got the same biek, it's excellent. Always wanted to paint it like Fabio Aru's Argon, but I enjoy the vintage race look.

  • Very very delayed update on this (inspired by seeing a Gallium Pro in another thread).

The local painter was very helpful - we did a couple of tests that didn't really work as I had pictured. We decided to go for the Didspade Kosmos Supershift Flake in the end with gold decals. I'm pretty happy for the price I paid, although I don't think it has turned out quite as nice as Kustom Flow's example - my assumption is issues with the quantities of flake mixed and the size of the tip on the spray gun. The effect is more subtle, with fewer large flakes.

The main thing is that I've added a new lease of life to the best bike I've ever owned.

  • Nice that! I think it would be improved by losing the headtube spacers and swapping to regular steerer spacers but it’s not too offensive as is

  • Thanks! I've use the regular spacers on the Gallium before and for the height I need them, I personally think the 3d headtube looks a bit nicer as it somehow integrates with the headtube.

Ideally I would slam it, but I think those days are gone forever now unless I dedicate my life to Yoga :(
