Specialized Stumpjumper ‘92

  • I was on the lookout for a rigid mtb from the 90’s to turn into my daily rig. I came across this Stumpjumper Pro from 92 which ticked most of the boxes.

Paint has some marks on it but overall, age considered and all its in very decent condition.

Bike is completely original and comes with a Suntour XC Pro drivetrain. I’ll take off the groupset for a proper cleaning of both the components and the frameset.

Just gave the handlebar a sanding and a polish to remove some scratches that bothered me.

Threw my favorite flat pedals on there which doubled the value of the bike instantly. 😅

Last but not least, fitted a King cage ti water bottle holder as they are simply the best out there.

For now I’m ordering some new tires as these are shot and see what potentially needs replacing after closer inspection.

  • that is so nice

  • lovely

  • Great bike

  • Things on the to-do list;

    • replace tires (ordered some Schwalbe Billy Bonkers 2.1 as this will mostly see tarmac)
    • replace seatpost with silver Thomson Elite 0 setback
    • refurbish existing original seatpost
    • replace saddle with Brooks C13 cambium (I'll keep the original obviously)
    • replace original foam grips with Brooks cambium grips in black
    • replace cassette & chain
    • refurbish crankset
    • polish frame and apply rust treatment where needed
    • replace cables
    • replace cantilever brake pads
    • potentially opt for a Nitto Bullmoose bar in silver - I'd like something a bit wider than the current original bars
  • Gave the frame a bit of a clean and applied rust treatment to some parts of the frame. I'm going to leave the paintwork as is, not repainting anything as I like the patina.

Tires arrived and cassette has been ordered as this one's KIA.

  • Lovely. I have a 1989 Stumpy frameset in the attic, should do something with it.

  • You should!

Worked on the bike a bit yesterday, cassette finally came in.

  • Beautiful! Which bottle cages are those with the two-tone?

  • Cheers.

It's a limited run of the Silca bottle cages. They look nice but I do prefer my King cages as they are less flexy. I never lost a bottle though with the Silca's.

  • Great job, it really looks stunning.

  • The quality of your work is just amazing! In the context of sustainability its good to see that so many 26ers are getting a worthy second life

  • Lovely build! That fade is wonderful. Nice to see triple chain set left as is :) also the saddle isn’t made of wood is it?

  • Really like that! The logo is so cool.

  • It most definitely isn’t although can feel like it depending on the distance you’ve covered haha.

It’s an Selle Italia SLR kit carbonio that’s covered in nubuck leather. I’ve used it quite a bit which gives it its patina look.

  • Cheers!

It makes me feel like a 12-year old again, grinning from ear to ear which is always a beautiful thing.
