What forks are you using on the Disc brake setup? 26” disc trucker fork??
-
• #3204
@HousecatHST which size tyres are you running on this? And how did you connect the front mud guard?
I'm thinking about getting a steamroller as a winter bike and doing a similar set up as yours. -

Currently it’s 30mm front (Schwab g-one speed) and 32mm rear (conti 4 seasons) it will clear 32 front too, but there’s been a degree of bodging to get that clearance.
The fenders are PDW, the 37s I think. I used the axle tabs that come with the fenders, as the frame doesn’t currently have fender mounts. This is fine on the front with QR but the rear ones were a massive PITA as they were too narrow to clear the PW rear hub bolts so I had to drill them out. I also had to zip tie the rear brake bridge to get some extra clearance.
I’ve had this setup for about 3 years and it been great, bit of a pain if you get a flat but you get used to it.
The bikes approach 50k miles and I’ve promised it a re-Ferb next summer. New paint some fender mounts, more bottles bosses mid fork rake mount.

Thanks! I was hoping a bit wider would be possible since it can fit 38c without mud guards.
That's a crazy amount of miles! Re-ferb sounds like a fun idea:) -

Anyone on a Skid Loader with an off-the-rack mudguard solution that doesn't require too much modification?

Hi,
Just wondering about putting one of the surly forks with disc and possibly front rack mounts on the steamroller. Has anyone done a conversion to disc brakes, would be grateful for any insights whether it is worth doing or not? Thanks in advance

Anyone had a go with these? https://www.condorcycles.com/products/condor-handbuilt-singlespeed-track-wheelset

I've been having a lot of fun riding my Steamroller off-road of late as a singlespeed. But, the long-drop Tektro calipers I'm using are absolute bobbins for braking in the mud. Has anyone ever tried something like mini Vs on a steamroller? Or failing that, disc fork recommendations for the front?
I don't really need to do this at all, as I could just ride my CX bike and keep the 'roller for commuting but who doesn't love a fairly impractical project?

Having thought about this, I cba with getting canti studs welded on. Soooo, disc fork recommendations from anyone who's done it before? I like the handling of the Steamroller fork, so don't want it to differ wildly from that. Straggler or Crosscheck?

Your question has come up what feels like hundreds of times before on this thread . ;-)
Just search for "disc" and you'll come up with this for example: -

My bad, hahaa. Ta

I can understand that, but it's amazing how quickly you get used to a different feeling fork, especially if you're not switching back and forth. I just put a Kinesis Carbon CX Disc fork on mine, saved a chunk of weight and honestly couldn't feel the difference in geo.

This looks a helluva lot better than I was expecting it to as well. Definitely the way I'm leaning, cheers!

Hi,
Trying to fit mudguards onto the Steamroller atm, have got some Berthoud mudguards although found they weren’t compatible with the p clips and they would require getting an addition sort of fitting to fix the stays to the p clips (from SJS). Just wondering whether anyone had put Berthouds on their Steamroller who may have some pointers please? Or if anyone has any pointers would also be grateful, although mindful that there seem not to be a standardised fixtures in the world of mudguards! Thanks

Hi!
Just seen your post about fitting the mudguards to the steamroller, you’re not wrong about requiring patience. Not sure how much the local bike shop would have charged as taken about three days to fit the rear one and still the front stays to go! Just wondering what sort of clips you used on the front forks please? Grateful for any pointers, trying to fit Berthoud mudguards… thanks

I run Goldtec hubs on mine so rather than a QR type setup, I have M5 bolts. So for mounts I bought these from Freshtripe
https://freshtripe.co.uk/velo-orange-mudguard-stay-mounts-bolt-on/
They have a QR version too
https://freshtripe.co.uk/velo-orange-mudguard-stay-mounts-quick-release/
I also used a daruma bolt in the fork
https://freshtripe.co.uk/velo-orange-fork-crown-daruma/
It was a bit of a faff but it is solid.
Worth noting that I did drop down to 25mm tyres to squeeze everything in. But once set up, it has been pretty rock solid.

Brilliant thank you that’s really helpful and much appreciated!
I’m trying to get things set up with Phil Wood hubs which also have an M5 or 6 bolt so should work well.
I have 28mm tyres and is definitely a squeeze, so will bare 25mm in mind for the future for sure.
Thanks again 🙏

No problem. My guards are Velo Orange for reference and I was running 28s until I had the wheels rebuilt with new rims. The new rims made the 28s a bit tight. Hopefully your combination will work well.

Looking about eBay spotted this for sale, someone has welded the disc tabs onto the standard fork.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404535435215

that's dope. someone in wanted thread was looking for this size too I think. gave the tomobike a follow, kinda also want disc upgrades on some frames...

would be interested in what a framebuilder thinks about this. I think I have heard concern previously about these sorts of mods as assuredly the stock roller fork is not meant to take the stresses associated with disc brakes

I've been scrolling his instagram for last 10 min, he seems like a competent frame builder. you can always drop him a line and report back ! :D

@Shannonball @Sebasbike Need to do some market research but current thoughts are £200 for frameset with Thomson clamp and very lightly used Cane Creek 40 headset or £500 for full build with new (well less than 50 miles) Arkane wheelset but with different cranks to the Omniums.
Leaning towards split rather than full build and have plenty of bits that could be negotiated into price.
