• It's not what I'd go for but there's often an issue with that middle room being pretty dark and I think that looks way better (and is much more practical) than the open plan staircase that a lot go for.

  • Yeah my middle room is dark, I think a better option is just sacrificing it to storage/utility/bathroom (assuming extension), ain't no one using it as a "snug".

  • If they had a loft conversion done the building inspector would have wanted their open stairs to be covered over as its a protected route out of the house. That might have been a reason why they did what they did but I agree it all looks incongruous.

    This is the way you go if you want that room to be freezing cold.

  • It stops all the heat going up the stairs for a start, as @Howard said. Just don't use faux Crittall!

    As I'm working on the first floor at the moment and I've removed the radiators our open staircase is quite handy right now but we're not keeping it.
