Those are the issues. My welding skills amount to a bit of soldering. Nobody I know has any welding equipment. Lastly I actually just want a Pied Piper-like travelling chap to come to my house, play a tune and fuck these studs right off out.

You need to change your group of friends ;)
As brommers said the welding nut trick works...even if it doesn't you can pop the barrell off easily and drop it in to a machine shop to spark erode/drill out the stud.
Not sure there are any people like that kind of work any more. See if there is a mobile mechanic that might help.

The suggestion of welding a nut on the end is what I'd do. It's always worked in the past. Any local friends with a MIG welder?
