  • Possibly a daft question, but will a 53 tooth other super record chainring work ok with a 39 inner? Am currently running a 52/39 combo on an 11 speed 5 bolt chorus chainset, but need to replace the worn outer as the gears keep slipping. 52 tooth outer are currently around £100 where as I can find 53's on eBay for £20 odd. Obviously the gearing will be a bit tougher, but as I hardly ever use my inner ring now it may just encourage me to use this more which is no bad thing.

  • It'll be fine. 53/39 is a standard race chainring. Might want to check your chain length. Would be tempted to get a new chain anyway.

  • Great thanks, have a new chain somewhere in the garage already, so will order the chainring and fit both.

  • Taking the wheel size as 27", 52 x 14 gives 100.3", whereas 53 x14 gives 102.2", I doubt whether anyone could tell the difference.

If the chain jumps, it's usually the block (cassette) sprocket, or the chain that's the problem. Of course, if the chainring is visibly worn it should be replaced, but the rest of the system probably needs changing.

  • I would obtain an example of the wrong spring, if the direction of the little hook is the only difference, and have a go at modifying it.

A little tickle with a torch (maybe with a bit of sheet metal stuck in the spring to shield rest of it a bit), and it would be easy to bend that around 90 degrees, quench it, and it's probably fine. IIRC that spring is just to return the flipper, so its tension isn't super critical.

Speaking of Ergo springs, ye olde G springs might be easier to come by if more folks had a go at tweaking some life back into tired ones...

  • Has anybody got any experience of Ekar?

  • been rocking it for just under a week now, just about 200 miles.

At first I found the thumb lever really annoying, but I've kinda gotten used to just placing my hand differently. It's definitely easier to use the thumb lever from the drops. Shifting has been pretty flawless besides the fit issue. Has that positive Campagnolo feel.

Braking has been great, but I'm using Swiss Stop pads and rotors.

  • How are you finding the spacing between gears?

  • I've had ekar for a couple of years. It's been great. The brakes are just super.
Indexing is defo more touchy than 10/11s. Make sure you've got nicely square cut cables and spend time getting it right. Once it's dialed in its stays nailed for a good while.
I think often people run the hoods too far down the bars, which accentuates the bump and isn't very comfy.
    5/7 strong recommend.

  • How are you finding the spacing between gears?

    no complaints so far

  • I'm thinking I'll need to replace my campagnolo disc brake pads in the next few months, and have just seen they are 30£ each. Are there any forum approved alternatives that don't cost an arm and a leg?

  • Swisstop Disc 30 RS (yellow ones)

  • Will check these out, thanks.

  • Big fan of the Swissstops

  • Galfer should be 1/3 of that

  • Sorry, me again. I've cut the chain down to the recommended 112 links, but still get heaps of chain slap on the chainstay. I know a little bit of chainslap is expected, but in my case it seems excessive (going over grates in the pavement etc.). I'm nervous of damage to the DS chainstay, even with a bit of protective tape applied.

  • Campag recommends 110 links for 405 -415 long stays when using 12 speed.

  • Pic in small/small?

  • This probably has been asked before but I read different things....;
I've got Campag Athena 11s shifters and jagwire Shimano shift cables, can I somehow make this work?
Will the housing at least fit in the shifter?
    Thanks!

  • No. Shimano shifter cables have different ends to Campag ones, they wont fit in the levers.

Brake cable ends are the same, so it doesn't matter for brake cables.

  • Okay so it's a bad idea to just put an Campag inner cable in this Jagwire housing

  • Here you go. I was wrong about it being 112 links, i've actually got 110 links as per Campy's instructions.

  • I've made it work. The 'pear' cable end slightly fouls the shifter hood. But only slightly.
Edit: just read properly. Youse guys is chattin' about gear cables...

  • housing will work fine, it's just the size of the shift cable head that is an issue.

  • Maybe the upper jockey wheels is too close to the smallest sprocket as the "lower branch"of the chain looks almost as if it is running flat?

I followed link below when setting up my 12 speed but skip to 5:45 for the bit I'm referring to.
