I think the OP was putting words in their mouth. He's not going after Mike's record at all.
"Rather than setting out with the goal of breaking the late Mike Hall’s longstanding 2016 record of 13 days, 22 hours, and 51 minutes, Lachlan is imposing a rule of resting for 12 hours in every 48-hour stretch, a ratio that he hopes will allow him to push through certain sections to reach hotels and campsites for more restorative sleep."

Yes but it's on the map...
I don't have issue with Lachlan. But the ef marketing department.
I like Lachlan's style and attitude a lot.

Ah, you mean the FKT marker is Mike's record? If they're doing the US route, shouldn't the market be Jay Petervary's? Didn't he set that? I've not had enough coffees to deal with all their routes.

That's the whole fuck up.
They're not doing the GDMBR they're doing the TD route. But they can't go for mike's record as there are diversions. And no, Jay didnt finish the GDMBR he was just riding, he got hit my a car and is currently undergoing multiple surgerys. Talk about pissing salt in his wounds. His whole ride was about raising awareness to the difference etc.
I suport showing the record time on the map, it shows respect to Mike. But they can't even get their communication about what they're doing factual and that lacks respect.
Someone can call me a jealous naysayer again, but it's not hard to get right.

Right, that's a bit clearer.
So, it's like they're claiming they're breaking the marathon record but only running 25miles.

I wouldn't say that. The routes are very similar, but not insignificantly different. They also have different names. The tour divide comes from the great divide MBR but over the years has been modified and then the GD was modified too, and now they're distinctly different things. It doesn't take a lot of research into the sport to know that.

I see they've altered their language on Instagram to say Tour Divide. Good for them to listen and correct.

Yeah, but they're saying they're going for an FKT on the TD route when they're not really.
It seems a bit like me using the Transcontinental name to ride across Europe and set the FKT (but with hotel stops only and drinking a dozen beers per country). It has as much validity as a Strava KOM but a heap of press because of the name.

So anyway. Have fun Lachlan!

Marketing departments. Bell ends. What he's doing is super cool as a stand alone thing, it doesn't need hype spin. But gota hype epic.

• #1237
Coulda just made a "Lachy goes touring the TD" video and the same people would watch.

How do you know someone has done an ironman ? They generally tell you.

Was a bit odd reading the EF website. He's going to be alone fending for himself, but with a film crew including his brother that he will interact with because he can't ignore his brother.

Wow didn't know that about Jay, sad to hear.
-
• #1243
Amazing achievement, hope he shoots for the official record next, but maybe that isn't his thing.
-
• #1244
He has stopped riding road races so if his team don't get publicity from his rides, there's no reason to keep him on the team.
-
• #1245
I read somewhere that he gets more coverage and engagement than the rest of the team, so I imagine they are very keen to keep him on.
-
• #1246
Well exactly. They generate a tonne of content from his riding. If he started doing ultras without any photo or video, the engagement would decrease
-
• #1247
Interesting that Lachlan's setup included panniers and wasn't too minimal.

He's a cyborg doing it in 12 days, only 9 days faster than me, but he had diversions and support. Now he's done the PR run, I'd like for him to go back and do it properly and see if he can break Mike's record...
-
• #1250
Unlikely to happen though - he's got the PR he needs and ridden the route. He seems more interested in doing different stuff as fast as he can and not bothered by records and officialdom.
He can't. There are diversions in place.
Also, I'd argue he shouldn't. But hey ho.
He's also riding the Tour divide route, not GDMBR. EF marketing department needs to take 5 minutes to educate themselves and offer some respect.
