No, he just wasn't such a great climber. Quite apart from his big ring, have a look at his big rig. He was a big rider. I rather doubt that he was on the big ring on the ascent. :)

I was looking for a holiday rental place and I absentmindedly put my postcode in the search box. Turns out there’s a place in the village for £3,100 a week! Sure they have a river view and can sleep 10, but bloody hell.
