  • That was exactly my concern. Who do they think will be next? One of the MAGATS?

  • Technically the only thing preventing Trump being elected speaker is that Republican's own rules exclude people under indictment as you don't actually have to be an elected official or something. Hannity was floating that scenario last night.

  • Seeing as the senate could block mad policies anyway it's a win. I don't think there's that much support for a more extreme speaker. All but 8 republicans voted for McCarthy didn't they?

  • Trump ranting about how corrupt the judge and prosecutors are while he was outside on a break, then he goes back in to appear bfore tham.
Trump complaining about not getting a jury…when his own lawyer forgot to request one.
He may try to disrupt proceedings and claim a mistrial.

  • I DECLARE A MISTRIAL!

I just wanted you to know that you can't just say the word mistrial and expect anything to happen.

    I didn't say it. I declared it.

  • you can't just say the word mistrial and expect anything to happen

Nonsense, of course you can. If you accept that you can declassify documents by just thinking about it.

  • I just wanted you to know that you can't just say the word mistrial and expect anything to happen.

Would love it if he got slapped with a contempt of court charge. 90 days in an NYC jailhouse… please Lord!

  • Does anyone have a good link to an explanation of the current fraud charges?

I didn't realise it was a civil case.

    Why is fraud civil?

On what basis is NY bringing the case? Is it them who suffered the loss, or is it like R v xxxx?

  • Proven claim is he knowingly inflated his net worth and the value of his assets in order to deceive banks and other eventual business partners into giving him bigger benefits.

It’s like someone adding a zero to their paycheques and bank accounts, then getting a hundred year mortgage on a landmark property because the bank is convinced they’re a safe investment.

  • Trump fraudulently over valued his properties when using them as collateral for loans. He claimed his own penthouse in Trump Tower was worth $600 million while others say it worth less than third of that. His son claims Mar a Lago is worth over a billion but independent contractors say approx 75 million tops.
At tax time Trump would claim they were worth much less.
All of these claims of his are well documented in loan agreements and tax filings.

  • The fairest resolution to this affair would be to restructure the loans based on the values he gave for tax purposes and recharge tax based on the values he gave for loan purposes.

  • And put him and his accomplices in jail for fraud and tax fraud :)

  • The idea that the Deutsche Bank bankers did not know that Trump was inflating the value of his assets is utterly laughable. Those cunts are entirely complicit.

  • If values were lower he'd have paid higher interest rates and get a bigger tax deduction?

  • Right I get the high level.

But if its civil why is NY perusing the case as opposed to the banks - who I assume are the ones who suffered loss?

And as it's fraud, why is it a civil case instead of criminal? And will there be a subsequent criminal trial depending on the outcome of the Civil trial?

  • Hidden in a lot of the stories but....

It is not a normal fraud case. Rather, it was brought under a powerful New York statute that gives the attorney general wide scope to investigate and prosecute corporate fraud.

  • And will there be a subsequent criminal trial depending on the outcome of the Civil trial?

Legally, they’re two separate realms, and the one wouldn’t impact on the other. Realistically, the civil sentence will probably weigh on the political decision to prosecute him for fraud charges or not. Not that it’s a desirable scenario, but there’s blood in the water now, and people who want a chunk of what trump has might feel rushed to take action now lest he’s ruined before they get theirs. That includes the taxmen for the State and City of New York.

  • This is quite lovely - Trump had a big am-dram set piece planned to announce his support for the twat Jordan, and his own guy fucked it:

  • Kraken turns canary

  • Just some fun stats on the 2024 election:

"While Biden has a narrow three-point lead in Wisconsin, Trump leads by 11 points in Nevada, seven points in Georgia, five points in Arizona and three points in both Michigan and Pennsylvania."

    ^ All swing states.

  • Also:

"Black voters – a core Biden demographic – are now registering 22% support in these states for Trump, a level the New York Times reported was unseen in presidential politics for a Republican in modern times"

    I mean WTF?!

  • I mean, Who TF looks at Trump, his record and everything he has said and done and thinks "yes, that's the guy for me"?

  • Someone who's been let down by the system time and time again and see zero value in paying taxes cause they never get any value back from the state. Having spoken to a few Americans that grew up outside the main cities, I can kinda understand where they're coming from. I wouldn't draw the same conclusion from their experiences, but I can follow their reasoning.

  • That could explain it for a few disenchanted voters, but tens and tens of millions?

Trump isn't going to change any of that is he?
