• I asked an electrician I've used before for a quote on replacing the fronts of some sockets and changing some light fixtures. Fairly sure it will be comfortably under a days work. He has quoted for every specified part of the work, £100 here £150 there, and so the final quote is over £1k. Can I politely ask what his day rate is instead? Or should I just find someone cheaper?

  • Sounds like very DIYable work, don’t fancy doing it yourself?

No point asking his day rate, it’s not like he’s suddenly going to reprice the job at £400. Just get some other quotes in.

  • That’s nuts, we had a partial first fix rewire and new wire of about a dozen sockets, fused spur wall lights with switches, chasing into concrete 5 ceiling lights, moving 4 ceiling roses to room centres which involved more concrete chasing and then the second fix including fitting the back boxes in insulated plasterboard and intumescent sealing.
    This was around 2k.

  • I’d shop around tbh if your not happy, as he’s given you a price and he’s not gonna come back and go oh my day rate is £500.
So my price is now £500, that would make him look stupid. Also it might be a job he doesn’t really want to do and that’s why he’s priced it like this!

  • I watched my FiL rewire a socket for us and had no idea how easy it would be. Watched lots of YouTube to make sure I was going to be doing it all ok going forwards.

the final quote is over £1k.

    Lol

Nah, they don’t want to do it. Find someone else.
