  • 24" wheels, for that faux gate aesthetic

  • if it's preformance orientated go 700, it's just better even at smaller sizes, at 32c you're not going to be looking to shave seconds off a downhill but you'll like the roll over on the long road sections. 700's on that pic don't even look out of prportion

if they're looking for a bike which "just fits their frame better" i'd do the 650. often overlooked with shorter or maybe just less leverage power wise is that the smaller/ lighter wheels makes stuff like getting up down stairs/ over farm gates/ onto platforms /hopping kerbs etc better too, even without factoring bike preformance in . i'm 6' and i still like the novelty of smaller wheel bikes due to these things.

    you know all this ofc

    edit:

fun article i was looking at the other day on this topic for myself , for mtb , but the numbers were nice to know

    http://www.eddiesbikes.com/Bicycle-Shop-Talk/whatis650bmtb

  • It's not performance orientated, she doesn't want or need another bike. This one will probably replace the other one.
She doesn't know any of this yet, I just want to make her something.
She commutes like 4km once or twice a week. Occasional trip into town and then very occasionally I drag her out on a 70km ride to Sussex but that's once or twice a year

  • small wheels, 100%

anedotally, ive found friends who do similar cycling tend to really like how smaller wheels look in a side by side aesthetic apraisal between small wheel bikes and big wheel bikes

  • Damn that Max fork is going to rock, lucky girl! Love the beefy Samson crown too. Looking forward to see them finished.

I think I'd heard Columbus had starting selling Max again, are those the new release stuff or are those old tubes you somehow managed to find?

If you ever fancy making any more Max forks with a long steerer for a 61 cm frame let me know, me want :)

  • Yeah you can buy new max. These ones came from Dave Yates when he closed so they're probably original version.
Let's see how this one goes first :)

  • Track front triangle mitred. It's just Columbus Zona. First time fully mitring a frame on a mill. Pleasantly speedy compared to power tools and files.
Ignore the headtube, placeholder for the jig, the real one will be a more reasonable length.

    So longer then

  • @PhilDAS have you built the Max fork from the previous page yet?

I'm getting some straight bladed ones made at the moment, not going to look as nice as yours with that Samson crown, and as mine is still a month or so away I wondered if you've got any pics of yours, or any tales of the build progress?

Are you having straight blades or are you going to try and bend those Max tubes for a raked fork? How easy/hard is that?

  • Nope, haven't done anything with it yet.
I broke my collar bone, had surgery, recovery, moved house to somewhere without workspace and left my job at a workshop
    🥲

  • It's going to be straight blade though. The crown has a built in rake. I think it's 7 degrees or something

  • Jesus, you have packed in a lot in the last few months!

Sorry about the injury and hope recovery going well, and good luck with the new living and working arrangements.

Look forward to seeing the forks when they're done and life has settled down a bit:)

  • Ouch dude, everything otherwise ok though?

  • Everything is sweet man, thanks for asking. I've moved out to the countryside and I've been enjoying the quiet, the walks in the woods, a bit of running (the horror) and I'm building up a fancy carbon bike for getting back on the road.
We'll be moving house again in the new year so hopefully I'll get a garage or something. I've brought all my tools with me so hope to do some of my own building and hobbies with my new found headspace and free time 😊

  • Said fancy whip teasers

  • 😳😳😳😳😳

  • Surprise twist. Good to hear you’re doing well.

  • oof! looking very HH
i bet you'd have it finished by now if you didn't spend so much time playing coffee golf :P

  • Hahaha it's a time sink for sure. I'm putting off the brake hoses!
I think I'm only a chain and some crank bolts away from building it

  • There will also be a gravel build in the next month. Going back to my roots and building that Arkose that Cake was selling

  • That’s good to hear! Sounded a bit like you’d hit hard times, glad that’s not the case.

  • If I was on my own, I think it would have been tough but I've had a lot of support and it's actually been great in the end.
The house and job move I knew were coming, I just could have done without needing my collar bone plating. 3 months on and I'm still not able to do much more than carry shopping with my right arm but I'm getting there. Taking a month or so between jobs has been so refreshing and I'm really fortunate to be in a position to be able to do that.
