Figured if I buy it, decide it's not for me and sell it on it won't be a significant loss.
My only concern was the active pickup battery life but apparently they're normally good for 100's of hours

Already a great choice, what bass?
For real basics the Fender play app isn't terrible or you can do a free trial of Scott's bass lessons which is great for learning all kinds of stuff (it's hosted by a lot of different people, not just him).
