  • Having been in the brook to clear overhanging trees and shit before the retaining wall was built, as @Chalfie said the potential biohazard also acts as a further deterrent.

  • Any idea what this ASLEF overtime ban will actually mean for train services? In particular late trains back from Luton on Tuesday night. Struggling to find details of the actual impact.

  • Just had an electrician over - there were three loose wires in the fuse box left by the guy who installed it last year and did a runner when I asked for a certificate. One was melting, the other two had a bit of damage but nothing substantial. All sorted and circuit back on.

  • Ah class. One of those ones where endless explaining only goes so far. Whip a cover off and the answer is straight in front of you!

Glad it’s sorted (hopefully relatively cheaply!).

  • Or should I just get an Asgard for the front anyway?

    Vikings.

  • This is probably an “explain like im five” question but why is it that investments like my pension are not making money/losing money while I can put the equivalent amount in an easy access savings account and make a return of 5%?

If the market is so unpredictable why would the people in charge of my pension not be able to leverage the high interstates like I can?

  • Cheers. Does look like they should be updated but I'm a bit suspicious of that as the journey planner is showing just the same services as normal days and all the services have this next to them.

  • I'd imagine because they're mostly buying stocks and shares, which aren't increasing in value now but should go up by more over a longer period of time.

  • Because your pension is in higher risk share investments that the fund managers expect to give better returns than 5% over the longer term.

You can usually choose higher/medium/lower risk+potential return options.

Also the pension will shift to lower risk investments like bonds and cash close to retirement.

  • The train I got this morning[1] was showing that. On Tuesday my trains are planning about half of the usual schedule, the same timetable as today, and all showing that. I don't know which train you are planning to get but I'd trust if for Tuesday evening.

[1] GreatNorthern rather than Thameslink but it's all GTR and basically the same

  • Real Time Trains shows them as STP (short term plan) which means the train company has uploaded something instead of the usual timetable, so it should be what they’re intending to run.

  • Cheers both, was entirely unaware of this stuff so very useful.

Not looking at a specific train but will be coming back pretty late so don't want to get stuck in Luton on a Tuesday night.

  • What's Webflow like? Just stumbled across it as a potential tool for a film production portfolio that can be relatively easily updated by multiple users.

I built a site years ago in bootstrap and was relatively happy with it because it didn't degrade over time. But my knowledge was limited so it was never quite designed to taste. I then tried wordpress which is where I've been at for about the past 5 years and I fucking hate it. Constant updates / things breaking etc. I've looked into Notion for the novelty of it using something like Super but it just seems a bit fragile/ephemeral to risk (both Notion and Super which could vanish any day)

I don't wildly want another subscription. Is there a non subscription alternative (i.e. a language I could pretend to learn) to build something pretty that anyone can log in and add/create/amend case studies?

  • Is anyone else recently having trouble with Komoot not pushing planned routes to Garmin Connect. I have it set up as a connection between Komoot and Garmin Connect and up until the past week or so, it has been absolutely flawless.

Now there’s a considerable delay or it doesn’t even push.

  • I would go to Squarespace if you don’t want/need something with complex features.

User friendly, relatively cheap, can be shared, decent level of more advanced customisation also available.

Webflow is great, but another level of complexity up.

  • Yes! I'm having the exact same issue. I have to turn my phone off and on again to get it to sync.

  • I have just tried that and it’s worked. And all the deleted routes are back in the Garmin Connect list.

So a bit of a farce! No doubt a problem at Garmin’s end - so shit on the software side of things.

  • I bought this TV aerial to put in the loft
    https://www.screwfix.com/p/labgear-tri-boom-tv-aerial/839jr
Having now read the description it says it comes with F Type (Female) Output Connector which I think is the threaded one and annoyingly not the ones I have (I've got just the push to fit coax ones like these https://www.screwfix.com/p/labgear-coaxial-plugs-10-pack/78603 ).

I'm not at home where the aerial is so can't see what is on the end of the aerial and googling is a bit unclear. What do I need to attach this to a length of coax cable, any ideas? Cheers

  • You can get cheap coax connections are are easy enough to fit with just a knife if you're careful.

That's exactly what you linked to, if it's not the one you have just chop it off and add the other half.

  • Cheers, that's the backup plan but I've not looked at the aerial yet so not sure how much wire I'll have to play with.

  • Is there any way of finding someone's address from their car registration? We have scaffolders coming tomorrow and they want to park outside. The problem is that a car has been parked there for 5 days without moving.

It's got an MOT, and past ones show it only does about 6000 miles a year

  • The DVLA will assist (by passing information to the police), if the car is parked illegally and/or obstructing egress via a dropped kerb. I'm not sure wanting the space for a scaffolding lorry is enough to warrant any action being taken.

  • DVLA used to be helpful for a couple of quid, check their online services. Alternatively, simply hitch to scaffolding lorry.

  • You can get the address if you have reasonable cause. Examples are given at https://www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla but that's not an exhaustive list. It takes a while.

The problem is that a car has been parked there for 5 days without moving.

I used to do that all the time.
