  • Since last Tuesday evening I have watched all the mission impossible films, in this order

    Fallout
    Dead reckoning part 1
    Ghost protocol
    Rogue nation
    3
    2
    1

I rewatched Fallout as I was going to see Dead Reckoning the next day at the cinema, after that I got a bit carried away. Dead Reckoning is not the best - combination of dubious AI theme bad guy and being a part 1 of 2 it lacks narrative clout. Mission Impossible 2 is absolutely the worst, as much as I love John woo, it’s a howling stinker. I had completely forgotten Phillip Seymour Hoffman was in 3 and was over the moon when he came on screen. Number 1 has some dubious moments but with Brian De Palma in the director’s chair it has a bunch of excellent touches. Fallout is just a top quality action movie, and Henry Cavill hams it up beautifully. Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation are solid middle ground stuff, but Jeremy Renner has an annoying face so they get marked down for him being there. Tbh they all sort of blur into one as they’re pretty much the same film but with the volume turned up as they go along. Except number 2 - that one stands out by virtue of how dreadful it is.

All in all, probably not the most edifying week’s viewing, and I am completely earwormed by the MI theme tune now. Was it worth it? Probably not.

Watching Conan the Barbarian now for a change of scene.

  • Probably not.

    You had me until here.

Watching Conan the Barbarian now for a change of scene.

    Then you had me again.
