A local, wealthy landlord type cut down his neighbours TPO oak tree, which would have been significantly older than the tree in question got a £3k fine.

This is a relatively good result – a (clarification: suspected) neighbour cut down my parents' TPO tree and my dad got the fine. Other trees on the land have been poisoned and the police are stumped (hah) as to who did it, because it certainly wouldn't be the former-council bigwig in the overlooking property next door.
That's for chopping down your own property. If I cut down your tree without permission it's presumably vandalism or criminal damage so could be 6 months in jail.
If it was a memorial, which in the case of a tree would need it to have been planted for a reason, then it could be 10 years in jail.
