I’ve been enjoying playing everything in C-standard tuning, makes everything nice and doomy.
Some mates recently started a band doing doom versions of bleak traditional folk songs. Beers and bongs seem to be pretty central to it all.On that note, I highly recommend the Weedian playlists.

This sounds ace! 🌚
Apart from the beers and bongs, obvs. ❌

I'm looking at banjos again. 🙄 I tried a six string guitar banjo a few weeks back and really liked it, not something I would've considered before.
Any advice? I've found a Deering Boston on MarketPlace that I really like. Obvs, it's quite pricey, which is a bit of a problem.

No idea but I had the loan of an old Framus banjitar many years ago. It was a dog but it played just about ok with a capo. I ended up mucking about with various Nashville tunings to mimic the 5-string reentrant tuning/peck string sound, it made it worse for solo but sounded amazing with others. It was fun...

That album’s ace.

I know fuck all about banjos. I bought mine in a junk shop in Southampton 10 years ago. Have never changed the strings!

The other half’s stable (+ a parlour)
Would love to be able to chicken pick a banjo.

I didn't know Margs played the banjo, nice! She's got more instruments than you do! 🤣

She doesn't, yet. It was her Mum's.
She's got 3, and I bought her 2 of them. Cunning plan... -

Had a day off on Weds, spend a happy couple of hours fettling the SG. Hadn't realised that the intonation ws a total mess. Sorted that and tweaked th bridge up a smidge, conditioned the fretbard, lubed the nut and gave it a good clean. It's such an awesome guitar.
Got a couple of shims to try and dial in the action on the Scroungo-strat. At the moment the saddles need to be cranked right down to get the action accepatble. Hoping a 1mm 1 degree shim will be enough to raise and tilt the neck so i'll be be able to set the action an the saddles without having the screws poking out of the top.

I utterly despise the faff of setting intonation of those bridges. Having to remove the string and pop it back on between making adjustments because the screw is in line with the string seems like such a baffling design choice.
Also being constrained by only being able to set the string height using two screws instead of per-string (though that's a more understandable design choice than the intonation screws).
Definitely not knowledgeable enough to comment on their impact on playability, but from a maintenance point of view I hate those bridges.

Impulse bought myself a bass (sensibly decided against getting a matching Steinberger bass). Am quite excited!
Any decent resources on getting started?
I'm guessing with the standard tuning matching the bottom 4 strings of a regular guitar that side of things is relatively straightforward.

I'm a complete bass novice who has been playing guitar for nearly 20 years. I haven't bothered with any kind of learning resources and just kind of found my way. it's a lot of fun. The hardest thing I'm finding is working on finger strength/dexterity again -I don't have the biggest hands, so a stretch from 1st to 3rd fret for example usually requires an index and the pinky due to the scale length. saying that, your plucking hand definitely requires the most work, learning where to rest your fingers and mute strings. faster lines which require multiple fingers and strings are like learning alternate picking again.
I also struggle a bit with visualising scales, I think because I must rely heavily on the B & E strings to reference/locate important scale positions - I can't do that easily on a 4-string...yet -

Already a great choice, what bass?
For real basics the Fender play app isn't terrible or you can do a free trial of Scott's bass lessons which is great for learning all kinds of stuff (it's hosted by a lot of different people, not just him).

Very cheap Anderton's own brand (I think) thing: https://www.andertons.co.uk/eastcoast-basses/eastcoast-mb4-bass-pearl-white
Figured if I buy it, decide it's not for me and sell it on it won't be a significant loss.
My only concern was the active pickup battery life but apparently they're normally good for 100's of hours

Thanks for the info! I imagine the trickiest thing will be the plucking. Hoping the note-finding will be straightforward enough, though expecting a few instances of reaching for a 5th string that isn't there

Looks good. Hope you have fun with it!
Depends on the pre-amp that's in there but they usually last a fair while so long as you remember to unplug the cable when you're not playing. I never really play active basses any more but I used to gig with one all the time & rarely had battery issues.

I did some time learning to be a bass player, as opposed to a guitar player playing bass, back in the mid 00’s. I was lucky as the guitar player in the band was actually a really decent bass player so I nicked lots of tricks from him. I would never claim to be any kind authority on the matter but I do really enjoy playing bass. Especially live.
Popped into the local music shop to buy strings today and they had a s/h Squier Bass VI in. Kinda tempted to trade something for it.

This was always one of my favourite baselines to play live. Came out the year LFGSS started. I remember registering my account from the box room in my flat in Kilburn just as the singer from that band moved in to sleep on our couch because as the record had tanked, his missus kicked him out and we all collapsed in a big tearful meltdown. Fun times! https://spotify.link/zvYuM27twDb

Just picked myself up a Capri Orange 3 year old Fender Player Tele with maple fretboard. Pretty grubby so needs a good clean and setup. I’ll pop some pics on here when I’m done. Price was £310including a Gator bag, it had the volume nob and the switch tip missing. As I walked out another person in the house passed me the missing nob…

Capri Orange is a good colour. Would love a Capri Orange Strat with black pickguard and rosewood board one day.
