Mudguards

  • Finally installed my Gilles B guards that I bought well over a year ago.

Also fitted some #tripleflaps which I made out of leftovers from my bathroom floor vinyl.

I have however misplaced one of these little black “R clips”, SJS has a kit for £5 plus postage, but I only need the one! does anyone have one knocking about?

  • Flap game hella stron!

  • I need some 700c silver guards, Velo orange or PDW? I have had PDW in the past and found setting them up pretty easy.

  • Whichever you like the look of. They function and set up the same in my experience

  • Installing PDW guards on my Standert ready for winter duties. Assuming it's wise to use a rubber washer between where the front guard metal hanger attaches to the back of the fork crown? PDW don't supply one with their mounting kit...

  • Did you find a solution for this?

  • I took it to my other LBS and they fitted it perfectly. I think the mechanic at the original shop was having a bad day.

  • They're only human! Did they put a rubber washer between fork crown and the metal hanger or just the standard metal washer that PDW supply?

  • I have a conundrum. I have a 42 tyre that I want to wrap up in some pretty mudguard, but the fork only clears around 45cm. GB mudguards come in 40mm and 50mm width at 650b. The former might touch the tyre, the latter won't fit in the fork without bending. I'm very reluctant to bend stainless steel mudguards, is there a safe way to do it without ruining the shape?

Or should I go chromoplastic and file away the bit under the fork?

  • If that tyre is 42mm a 50mm guard will fit.

  • more than 45mm of mudguard won't fit in the fork, which is the whole problem.

  • How about these Tanaka 650b x 45mm?

edit: out of stock and doesn't seem to be other availability in the UK, apologies

  • Be careful with sizing for GB mudguards, because the measurement is from the external edge, and the internal roll is relatively large (2-3mm on each side).

50mm should work well, but you’ll need to cut and file a section out of each side. If you’re fixing it directly to the underside of the steerer tube, that should probably be okay, perhaps with a bit of extra reinforcement.

  • So I had the same problem on another bike with GBs, and I just squished them in a vice. I was kinda impatient at the time. Worked fine but fucked the curve, and it sits funny over the front wheel now.

I'm not sure cutting them up is an option. I tried drilling through once, and didn't get far. That steel is tough. Had to hammer through to get a brake bridge hole on the rear.

  • That seems a bit odd, a metal drill bit shouldn’t have too much of a problem if you work up from smaller sizes.

I guess you could always take them to someone with a pillar drill and circle cut bit as an alternative?

  • Have you put a 50mm guard in because it looks like there is 4mm room each side?

  • hmm didn't actually try, I guess I should find a surrogate before I panic

  • Absolute game changer in terms of wobbly lower mudguard off-road...

  • If you want them fitted long term I'd go for PDWs

  • I’m trying to winterise my fixie but I’m totally clueless about mudguards. Kinesis say my fork (DC07) is good for 28s and guards but I have to jam the mudguard (Bluemels 35) up into the fork crown to get it to fit. Is it acceptable to have that much contact between the mudguard and the fork or do I need to change something in this equation?

  • Anybody here got tips for mudguards for 650b wheels? Max tyre size is 47-584 so the PDW 650 Beast looks plausible but my word, they are costly! Target bike is Fairlight Secan so all guard eyes present, stays do not need to be bodged.

  • If you can spring for a Fairlight you should justify good mudguards.

PDW are easiest to fit and last well. Berthoud are cheaper and last well but fiddly to fit. Both pairs of VO mudguards I’ve had have cracked even if I use leather washers. Honjo are to delicate for me, more for a show bike IMO. SKS Square shape metal guards wobble like a wet noodle.

Good call! RedShift stem too, I reckon

  • Keep in mind this Weigle tutorial is for alu mudguards @kvragu. I could not re-radius my Berthoud mudguards for instance (and Berthoud says this is normal for stainless steel mudguards).

Denting the sides might also prove difficult, though it is fairly different from re-radiusing. Now that I think of it, I have actually dented a Berthoud mudguard by jamming my foot between the downtube and the mudguard.
