  • High levels of insulation, solar hot array and a wildflower roof lower the carbon footprint of the building, whilst the stripped out existing house provides firewood for the stove. The old house heats the new

    Chuckled at this bit

  • Do like that dormer tho

  • I think the pitched roof looks great.

There’s some terrific examples on the last few years of Don’t Move Improve - that’s a great starting point. Sedum roofs look nice but wouldn’t be for me. Servicing and upkeep would put me off

  • All that glazing on the West face means it will really overheat in the summer afternoons, FYI

Luckily our architect lives on our street with a house on the same side of the road.

Hopefully she'll know what's necessary and how big an issue it may be.

We were considering some kind of pergola thing over the patio that we could grow wisteria/passion flowers over anyway which might provide some shade (and privacy).

  • Assuming neighbours don’t have an extension - eaves height on the party wall boundary will probably be the key constraint in my experience. Really annoyingly seems all councils have their own expectations. I’ve had everything from 2.6 - 3m. It’s why most side return infills are pitched.

  • I never liked that one much - seems like a bit of an ideas explosion. Ground floor plan / what was done with the stair interesting tho.

  • Yeah can see what you’re saying there, doesn’t feel like a single theme, but I do like a lot of what’s going on.

    Me too, very Pseuds Corner.

  • Lil pergola is high on my list of wants for the garden

  • After nearly 2 months, I finally have a tap, a dishwasher that's connected and commissioned UFH. The UFH is absolutely wonderful.
Anyone got any suggestions for some sort of edging strip to kind of hide where the builder has made a mess of the back of the cupboard round the socket?

  • Anyone got any suggestions... [to]....hide where the builder has made a mess of the back of the cupboard round the socket?

Put a shelf in and fill the cupboard with all the shit you normally have under the sink?

  • or go full-euro and stick a/the bin there

  • I thought that looked like a pretty tidy hole as these things go!

  • Stick a false back in and hide all the services. That's the usual solution

  • Our neighbours do have an extension, it's one that slopes down from just below their upstairs window so the highest point must be more than 3m.

  • My thinking!
I could show the DIY horror I have in my cupboard but I did

Put a shelf in and fill the cupboard with all the shit you normally have under the sink

    so can't.

You'll still have to hack away probably at the shelf though to clear the syphon.
    I also had to.

  • The infrared cam is a bit creepy though

  • We're having some work done soon that will involve removing a chimney breast downstairs and upstairs, with support in the loft for the remaining stack. We've got planning permission, had the structural engineer round, got building control working, all that stuff. But in sorting the party wall our surveyor saw that next door has removed their downstairs chimney breast and left upstairs. He couldn't see if it had been supported properly, and neighbour has no knowledge or paperwork. My architect says he's spoken to the structural engineer and there's no problem with us starting, but the party wall guy said that if the stack next door collapses because of vibration it's on us to fix it. I've suggested to next door that they get a surveyor in to take a look at what's going on, but I don't get a feeling of urgency from them. What steps should I take?

  • Pay for the surveyor next door?

  • Is that a proper thermal imaging cam? Been wanting to get a survey done for a while.

  • It is indeed but it's not mine alas. It's the heating engineers. It's from Flir but don't know what model it is.

  • I've suggested to next door that they get a surveyor in to take a look at what's going on, but I don't get a feeling of urgency from them. What steps should I take?

This would be quite invasive, so I can understand their reluctance. As above, you might have to pay for a surveyor and any making good after they've had a look.

If you are lucky, the council might have a notification or BC record. Maybe ask them?

  • Not sure where you are but Library of Things in Dalston have a couple to hire. Gonna get my geek-on once it’s proper cold.
