  • You might be able to upload just the photos you want to iCloud, instead of linking your phone (and all within).
Sign in at iCloud.com and it should be separate from the local phone copy.
Not tried it that way myself but may well work.

  • You can simply export the photos you want to share to a directory on your iCloud path.
    Then share that directory.

Had to do this for some wedding photos last year when I discovered Photos Shared Albums were no longer uncompressed sharing.

Now that the new phone is 48mp MAYBE they will up the quality of shared albums.

  • Apple TV remotes and randomly scrolling right.

    What now?

  • I had the same but volume was stuck. In the end I had to factory reset the remote and it was fine.

  • Is it the new one or the stupid glass one? Either way, almost certainly dirt / dust underneath the buttons. They're not really user repairable so try to clear it with some contact cleaner or some isopropyl alcohol and, if that doesn't work, buy a new one.

  • @Chalfie I've got a spare trackpad one somewhere from a unit that shat itself if you need to replace.

  • New one, I've squirted air at it, and screen cleaner. I think it might have had some zwift sweat on it.
I only bought this one in March, as the previous one got thrown across the room/eaten/stuck up a bum. Should be covered by a warranty or something right?

  • Yeah, one year warranty. Apple are good with replacing these things without questions but you'll probably have to go into a store which is a PITA.

Try their support app if you have an iPhone. It's actually pretty good.

  • HOLD ON A MINUTE LADS.
I've just restarted the Apple TV, updated it, set up by phone, AND THEN ADDED THE REMOTE BACK IN AND IT ALL APPEARS TO WORK.

I'm going to stop working for the day now as nothing can get better than that.

  • You mean you wasted our time on here before you’d even turned it off and on again? FFS

  • NO.
    I HAD DONE THAT YESTERDAY.

But today it offered up an update. FFS.

  • Is there a way to have a shortcut-icon on the homescreen that spawns a, say, 5-minute-teatimer?
Ideally launch it & start it, so it's a press-of-a-button kinda job?

  • In the Shortcuts app create a shortcut that does that, then Share > Add To Home Screen.

  • That works so sweet, thank you!

"Shortcuts" was one of the things where I went huh what's that I don't need that I'll delete that when I got my new iPhone, admittedly 😅

  • Just installed Ventura on my dad's 2015 iMac with OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Magic! Appearantly can build hackintosh too!

  • 2 8gb sticks of ram removed from a 2012 MacBook Pro which I am recycling. Anyone want them for postage. Pretty certain the ram wasn't causing any issues, I installed as an upgrade about 7? Years ago

  • A mate uses a mac but has a niche work specific program that can only be run on a PC. They were wondering a about grabbing a cheap PC to run it.

However, I'm sure you can set up some sort of VM to do this right? Is this the way to go? And/or are there any other options they should look into?

Idk enough about their requirements, but I guess it would also be handy if they could copy information from it to then input into whatever mac CAD app they are running.
    Cheers.

  • I'm sure you can set up some sort of VM to do this right?

Bootcamp if you have an older intel Mac. It's pretty much free to use if you have a windows license key.

Parallels is the user friendly VM. It's remarkably expensive now though. And you still need a windows license. IIRC anyway.

Is this the way to go?

Neither is free. If the niche program is undemanding, a cheapo used laptop might actually be cheaper than running parallels long term.

  • I’m in London today, trying to order an iPhone 15 pro on the Apple website for collection in London shows no availability- does anyone know if this is true?

As in, might they have them for walk in customers, or have they launched a product with no availability, which seems a bit peculiar?

  • Right. OK.

I had this recollection of the collective online response to using another OS always being "just set up a VM".

Idk what mac they have, but assume their main one is a new M1 and their other one would probably be an Intel.

  • CrossOver for Mac works very well for lots of Windows apps.

  • Cheers. I should add this is a very small niche program to work out pipe water flow or something built and run by one guy.

So I don't think it will be on an app store or anything.

Sounds like buying a cheap PC laptop is probably the way to go.

  • Magic Keyboard anyone? Barely used - £100

  • It's usually pretty accurate. The pro is always limited avails on launch.

Try something like Currys or JL? They might have a click and collect.

Edit: Looks like currys have stock: https://stock-checker.com/products/iphone-15.html - just depends if there's one local to you.

  • Doesn't need to be an an app store to work with CrossOver. My father uses it to run MS Money, installed from a CD. Discontinued by MS more than a decade ago and his version is probably even older.
