When I was young I once worked somewhere where one of the owners was such an awful bully (to everyone, but more so female staff), that they stopped hiring more women and we had an unofficial meeting rota when they were in the office, so they weren't left alone with female staff.
It was one of my first proper jobs, so I empathise with the runners they referenced in the doc. Likewise I understand how this is normalised. While I didn't think it was right to prioritise men for new hires and I did say what bullshit it was, at the time it also seemed to me to be a pragmatic solution. I didn't view it as especially far fetched or crazy.
