I mean, most of them believe in homeopathy - it's not as if they're not a fertile ground for specious bullshit.

Something I thought was interesting about the Brand thing was the conspiracy aspect.
Brand makes the point that when the MSM was monetizing him they were aok with his behaviour. Now they aren't, he is getting attacked.
He's not wrong - in the sense that people continued to book him, promote him and turn a blind eye to his behaviour when he was a cash cow. However, there is that classic conspiracy logic leap:
loosing your protection because your not valuable ≠ nothing to see here
Not to excuse his behaviour at all, but my main takeaway was another example of the media's idolization of stars creating an enabling environment. Breaking that system of personality cult is incredibly hard and I wonder what steps the industry has taken in reality.

Yeh some people and media organisations have serious questions to answer for enabling the kind of behaviour he is accused of. He is totally responsible but others were complicit. They story that C4 wanted to bring him back and when someone flagged his past behaviour the proposed solution was to remove all female staff from the crew and set blows my mind that they were willing to put "the talent" that far above everyone else

When I was young I once worked somewhere where one of the owners was such an awful bully (to everyone, but more so female staff), that they stopped hiring more women and we had an unofficial meeting rota when they were in the office, so they weren't left alone with female staff.
It was one of my first proper jobs, so I empathise with the runners they referenced in the doc. Likewise I understand how this is normalised. While I didn't think it was right to prioritise men for new hires and I did say what bullshit it was, at the time it also seemed to me to be a pragmatic solution. I didn't view it as especially far fetched or crazy.

the example of Lynndie England comes to mind, perhaps the most notorious example of sexual abuses perpetrated in prison in my lifetime, forever associated with this woman-even if she was just following orders. i don’t get comments like this, why leverage your gender like this? my fantasies about punching tory politicians in the face are a burden to me, they make me sad and are exhausting. i don’t feel like ‘owning’ them by associating them with something about my identity, i’d rather they’d not bother me. but then that’s different again because your fantasy is about presumably a man punching brand in the face ‘for you’, as it were. there’s a lot of complexity here.

Conspiracy theories take hold easier when distrust already exists.
Yes homeopathy is BS but structural sexism and denial of pain in women can lead to them turning away from what should be fully evidence led medicine. That can then lead to a conspiracy rabbit hole...
Women herbalists, abortion access and lots of things have been suppressed by a small group of powerful men (hashtag not all men) , the female is often still seen as "weak" (look at how green party often gets criticised) and until that is addressed in the open its just easier for BS to hold on.
Though I bet the conspiracy bs money is mostly coming from powerful men too, some people should be put under strict financial supervision... ;)

I shall listen to this, the title seems relevant to a (mindset coach) family member who recently totally straight faced said at the dinner table, “Alex Jones makes some very good points”,
Mother: “ooh yes I love her on the One Show too”
gf: “is that the bassist from Blur?”I chose not to respond, but part of me wants to discuss this with him, but part of me also knows exactly how the conversation will play out.
take hold easier when distrust already exists.
I reckon this is a big factor. And rightly or wrongly there is a lot of that today.

Perhaps they can elucidate what points Alex Jones is right about.
They have heard of the saying that a broken clock is right twice a day? ;)
Seen that with the pandemic, I ended up talking to somebody who with a straight face told me Soros was behind it with Gates and Bezos (husband and I...omfg) and while part of was thinking "ah people over 60 are more likely to believing everything on the internet" I had to agree they were right old people were left to die.
So those groups go "look they don't care about you" (part factual, part emotional) and "some of these decisions are maybe stupid" (part factual, part emotional) and next thing you know... the virus came from a China lab and vaccines don't work. (ok now the facts are gone...)
Well, I know who I won't be in close vicinity of next pandemic...but it's sad to see genuine concerns and being a bit gullible get twisted into this.
But we couldn't really get through, I did say to her "yes about old people I think they didn't try enough for sure" but that we did get vaccinated due to the risk of long covid. The rest, what do you even say to that? :)

Joking aside this gave me flashbacks to a mate who was into all this stuff back in the early '00s.
They'd hit the point where it was almost impossible to have a conversation. People would be talking about football and the next thing you know
yeah, Henry is fucking sick, but did you know there are 7 relmes of light and we're only on the 5th?

Also without wanting to get too woke, the level of privilege is jarring. All the conspiracies are so 1st world and self centered.
What about conspiracies to allow people to pay less tax for unearned income vs earned?

What about conspiracies to allow people to pay less tax for unearned income vs earned?
Whoa whoa whoa that sounds like socialism!
…
Oh right, it’s the rich paying less tax and taking home more unearned cash, that’s OK they’re job creators and entrepreneurs and they invest and they’re savvy and one day I’ll be just like them so leave them alone!

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/sep/19/youtube-suspends-russell-brand-revenues-channel
YouTube has suspended Russell Brand’s ability to earn money on the platform following allegations of rape and sexual assault in a massive hit to his finances.
The video-sharing and social media site said it had suspended Brand’s channel from the YouTube partner programme after serious allegations against him, meaning his videos are no longer able to be monetised on the platform.
Does this mean they've not restricted access to any of his videos. So essentially they can still earn money from the videos but he can't?

Yeh some people and media organisations have serious questions to answer for enabling the kind of behaviour he is accused of.
The worst thing is that it take a certain amount of statement, evidence etc. to be ableuuu to make a difference.
If it happen the first time, you bet your ass the victim will get the blowback and the offender will continues doing what they want

Yes, though I believe his videos fall under certain brand safety categories that mean most brands would be excluding his videos from their ad campaigns but I don't think Google have removed his videos from potential ad delivery.
I'm one of five YouTube Premium subscribers on the planet so I can't check but watch a video and, if you get an ad then they're making money.
-
• #84522
or just a clever marketing ploy by the youtubes by reminding the mainstream media of all the RB content on the platform while he's in the news so they can rake in the ad revenue?
i'm also one of the five - just have to find the other three and we can have a premium party?!

Don’t have a link but you can expect to hear about how a children’s book on Black people living in Britain thousands of years ago until white people rocked up. It has the internet very upset.

Is there any more context?
Is it the idea that there were North African Auxiliaries here before the Anglo-Saxons?
Ngl "the Internet is upset" is a bit of a weak news story.

Is that not the recent Horrible Histories song 'Been here from the Start'? Or is this another hoohaa (which wouldn't surprise me).
The Conspirituality podcast is also really good for examining the link between fitness/wellness influencers, yoga teachers etc. and harmful conspiracy theories. I think it's a significant echo chamber effect sometimes and the people in those social groups tend to be easy prey for anyone looking to manipulate them. There's a high incidence of PTs and yoga teachers getting caught in MLM scams and losing money shilling Herbalife or something I believe (just from my own observation as an outsider married to a yoga teacher).
