  • Child's Bike for Disposal - Possible Fork Problem

This is an 18" Peugeot pseudo 'racer' which might appeal to some one.

You will see in the photo (at the bottom of this post) that the powder coating is cracking at the top of the fork blades. This may or may not be superficial - I haven't investigated because my grand daughter rejected it in favour of an ancient single speed.

If anyone thinks it's worth trying the thing to do would be to clean the powder off and examine the metal of the blades to see if there's any sign of cracking. Alternatively find new forks or use it for spares - the ali rimmed 22" wheels might be useful to some one.

No one should ride this bike until the fork problem is resolved

I want to get it out of my garage - it's free, but if it's useful I'd be pleased if you could make a modest donation to the forum.

Collection only from NW London - PM me if you want to see it.

  • Anyone have a link to replacement 19mm diameter grips instead of the official islabike ones?

Just about to swap out the gripshift so gonna replace the grips at the same time - they're £18 a pair Inc postage for the oem ones...

Edit - ignore this - just measured to double check & bar seems to be 22.2 after all...

  • For towing ur 3 year old up the hills, this works for us. Other end of the scissored latex tube ends the same way in the saddle rails.

  • Any idea of where (other than Islabikes direct) I can get 24x1.3 presta valve inner tubes?
    Tyres are 32-507

  • Schwalbe?

  • Hi all,

Suggestions for girls bikes aged 5 and 6?
They've never ridden one so far

  • We’ve found frog balance bikes to be good. Tadpole plus is the bigger one.

  • Cheers! I'll look at them

  • Still happy

  • Literally living the dream. I'm going to miss this thread when my kids are a bit older (10, 8 & 8 currently)

  • MTB pedal recommendations for a 9yo?

Building my daughter a 26er based on a jump bike frame as she’s outgrown her 24” wheeled Islabike.

  • I'd try BMX pedals as they're generally a bit smaller than the big platform pedals that are currently popular in MTB.

The Odyssey Twisted PC plastic come in a lot of colour options.

  • Thanks, will have a look

  • Anyone selling an Isla Beinn or other similar quality 20inch geared kids bike?

  • Hi, yes. It's blue and in east London. I'll be there tomorrow and can send pics if you wish

  • I'm looking for options for a first bike and have a few questions.

    1. I guess SS is probably best, but do people normally add gears later or are they on another bike by the time they hit gears?

    2. How does sizing work? They are tall and currently have a 44cm inside leg. I'm guessing this is the key measurement as it dictates standover height.

Other than Isla what other options are good - as in light and actually designed for kids?

    • Dawes Academy
    • ridgeback? Or am I miss remembering that?
    • Frog?

    Cheers.

  • I'm no good with inside leg measurements on kids but are they still learning?
Balance bike then SS is my recommendation.

If they're old enough for 14"+ then you could always take the drive train off and fit it when they're ready for pedals.

Vitus, Squish & Woom (not sure if we get those in UK)

  • If anyone is after a child seat and rack attachment this looks like an ideal offer (not mine!) https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/333064-child-seat-for-bicycle-25-pounds/

  • I spent ages looking at balance bike options and went for an Isla. Mainly because it comes with a rear brake and learning how to use that as early as possible is a good idea, I think.

  • Cheers.

Yeah I've got a couple of balance bikes and they're just not into it - I think it's the scooting forward.

They've never been on a bike themselves.

  • You don't need to start with a singlespeed, but learning how to use gears (and brakes) is something that can come later.

I didn't want to push either of mine to learn, the eldest decided to learn when she was in reception as some of her friends were riding then. The youngest was six when she finally concentrated on learning, and cracked it within about half an hour. So I think it's best to get them the bike, and then let them pick it up when they are ready.
