  • Enjoying home barista life, the pavoni has gone on long term loan to my little sister, so shouldn’t ever find a use for a second coffee machine I can have it back!

The hand grinder is beginning to errr grind, it’s like a minute for each coffee and is beginning to cause some pain in my wrist…

So, beginning to look a a grinder… according to everything I’ve seen it’s hard to look past the niche zero… any other suggestions out there…?

if anyone knows of a second hand good one let me know, there are a few on Facebook, but I don’t trust anyone on there…

  • Really like my Niche Zero would recommend

  • It's all very budget dependant tbh. You can spend £100 to £1000s, but realistically Niche seems to do exactly what people want it to, and they seem a lot more reliable than some of the other new makers on the market (looking at you ODE and Wilfa).

  • Would be going for the Niche personally. The Sette is another option, but mine stopped working suddenly (think it's a power board issue but haven't confirmed) so not overly keen to recommend those!

  • Lagom mini, not much bigger than a hand grinder.

  • Woof that thing is lovely looking - do you have one?

  • Lagom mini, yes. Use it for espresso, works a treat.

  • I still rate my Silenzio, unless you’re single dosing, though even then it’s pretty easily adaptable. Even though they’re relatively small consumer units, the Mignon range are built more like commercial grinders - incredibly durable, handsome and consistent.

  • Is it just for espresso? If so one of my colleagues just bought a Mignon Libra grind-by-weight and loves it.

  • Workflow wise I prefer my Niche Zero to the Duo, as it doesn’t spit bits of bean out during grinding. It’s also usefully smaller if you have a congested counter. I’ve not yet tried them back to back so can’t offer a comment on the espresso they make in comparison to one another.

  • Yes just espresso, although I’m getting enticed by the world of pour over… the mignon looks mostly good, but all the reviews highlight the declumper thing being a pain and I think the bellows look a bit naff personally..

  • Declumper is a pain? How so, I haven't run into any issues, though I don't single dose.

  • As RVL said Coffee Under Pressure are good, but there's also:

Picnic Foods -near the Market Place - nice cafe, good food and coffee
Workhouse Coffee - King Street - old school indy shop with a huge range of beans,

  • Thank you. Sounds like she'll have options to satisfy her cosmopolitan tastes!

  • The reviews that I’ve seen complain about the plastic bit between the grinder and delivery chute, in that it holds a gram or so of coffee in it…

I know that’s pretty minor, and given my current coffee consumption it’s pretty trivial as it’s probably only a few hours between each coffee…

  • Yes, plus one for both of these.

  • Ah ok.
Between bags (340gms) my basic cleaning regimen includes sticking a clean wet cloth up the chute as far as it’ll go, spinning it so it goes even further and then rinse and repeat. This in addition to burr brushing of course.
Once or twice a year I take the top plate off and give it a more thorough scrub with vacuuming and taking the burrs apart.
I find it very easy to maintain.

Had to check I wasn't in the personal hygiene thread for a minute there...

  • That area is where all my best ideas come from

  • Has anyone had any experience buying an old mazzer grinder e.g super jolly - and using that to single dose espresso at home? e.g replacing burrs etc

I appreciate the Niche Zero gets huge recommendations was just wondering if there was a cheaper decent option

Some people would pay good money for that

  • Hey. It’s me.

  • Excuse the mess (the grounds, my life etc).

  • Loving the tape. What mods have you made to it and how is it?

There's a couple of second hand niche zero's I've been eyeing up for 300£ and wondering if I'd actually save any money refurbing a mazzer
