  • Thanks, I am a mega novice and it was this thread that really inspired me to have a go.

I started with coloured pencils and have just started dabbling with watercolours after some advice from @Technics100 on what to use. The little pad and mini paint set recommended is great for taking with you out and about.

  • Agreed, noticed the reflections too.. Great stuff @eskay. it might also be worth adding some darker colours over the bottom of the boat for shadow.. and maybe some darker colour in the blocks in the wall for more of a 3d effect..

I think the pen is a Derwent Line Makers in a 0.2mm .. I'll check later when I'm home from work..

  • Keeping on experimenting with colours on this one...

  • The shading and colour on the torso's is brilliant, such a 3d look about it..

  • Thanks for the compliment, @Technics100

  • Todays attempt at “art”

  • If ir expresses how you feel, it's art (at least, to me). Anyway: who's to decide what is art and what is not. Again: to me, the only one to decide is he/she who creates.

  • Btw: it's not my style but I like it.

  • Love the boat and the reflection is great

  • Does anyone have any experience of stretching their own canvas?

I want to do a big canvas for our bedroom. 1mx2m maybe 2.5.

A 6m x1.5 roll is £49. Which seems like good value to me. Plus the stretcher. I’ve got a stamped gun. And some stretching bars already.

  • No experience but believe the most difficult part will be the (wooden) frame. A stiff frame that size will ask for decent wood and some woodworking skills, no? I bought a 100 x 80 cm (350 g/sq m) cotton canvas and it costed 45 €.

  • Really like this, it reminds me of something else but cannot think what it is.

  • Jackson Pollock? - possibly his studio floor?

  • I used to make all my own canvasses back when I painted (so college/uni days). It's fairly straightforward to be honest. If you're making a canvas that size, you'll want some reinforcement in there (just a couple of horizontal bits in to support the longest sides). Then it's just a case of getting the canvas nice and evenly taught across the whole area.
Have you ever done it before? Might be worth trying some smaller canvasses first before tackling a large one. I have done some that size and don't remember it being much harder, but this was about 20 years ago now...

  • No never done it before. I’m thinking if it’s braced well enough should be fine. Trying it on a smaller canvas first is good advice.

  • I was working tonight until about 9pm, so decided to do this for a bit of relaxation.. bigger than normal as I found an A4 pad. Had saved the photo online from someone's holiday travels.. somewhere in central France..
