  • Fig tree

I'd be warry of having near a house in case it gets too large and the roots become invasive.

  • Figs, in the UK, in relatively rich soil, need their roots constrained to nudge them into fruit production rather than leaves & branches. Consider where you've seen Fig trees around the Med coastline, barely clinging onto bare rock, or at the edge of a loose gravelled car park. A UK garden environment is much easier to thrive in.

Old school gardening books used to suggest lining a hole with (5) paving slabs. These days it is much easier to plant a fig inside a used washing machine drum sunk into the ground. The many small holes ensure soil moisture can reach the roots of the Fig, but also limit the size of the roots that can venture out.

  • Cheers. That's really interesting.

  • That could look fab at the front of the house to the left of the front door trained to grow up.
Looking to do some gravel/ rubble/stone Old steel rsj / wood type Mediterranean garden at the front.
Have an olive in a big pot I can put at the front too

  • Oh shit so the fig I have in the raised bed in front of my new shed is a ticking timebomb?
