Could this all be Wagner's fault?

Alberich in Das Rheingold, the first opera in the Ring Cycle, written in the 1860s. He is mocking Wotan and the other gods:

Alberich

Die in linder Lüfte Weh'n da oben ihr lebt, lacht und lieb

Translation:

Lapped in gently wafting breezes ye who now live, laugh and love
