Thanks rhb and almac. Gotta have a plate put in so waiting for that.
In other news, one of the lovely teachers, Argentinian called Luz got mugged for her phone on Sunday night in Victoria park. If anyone knows anyone who might be interested in lessons in park skating she's keen to earn some cash. I have her number or can pass on insta details. Can do individual or group or whatever. She's a great teacher. She was doing the bowl when I attempted my half pipe drop in so not tarnished

What are the recommendations for 4 wheel skates, for somebody who’s never skated before? Ideally something from eBay which won’t be expensive, when I decide it’s really hard and can’t do it.
-
• #110
Sorry, I haven’t checked it on this post for a bit, sorry to hear about Luz, what days is she teaching, I might drop by tomorrow.
Has the plate been fitted? Heal up soon.

Spend no more than £100 on skates go to Decathlon or Skate Attack. Personally I reckon in-line are easier than quads to learn the basics. You should get protective pads, these are really important.
Knees
Bum
Elbows
Hand/Wrists
HelmetBecause the only way to learn is to crash

I reckon ollies ebay shop bauers could be an option as they'd hold most of their value if you sold them on as didn't enjoy it?

Hey Almac, I think Luz may have carried on with her travels, although I can contact her and ask if you wish?
Plate fitted. It's been 3 weeks now. Struggling with pain unfortunately. Think I misjudged just how long the recovery might take. I'm sure all will be fine, just gotta be patient! -

Echoing Almac and having smashed my wrist skating, I'd definitely recommend good protection. I was using full guards, stupidly the cheapest I could find. Won't make that mistake again.
Have fun though. If you're in London, loads of good skating classes to get you going. -

Hope you are on the mend.
I’ve bought a pair of these, with the intention of covering more mileage around town across all surfaces

Would these be better commuters than quads? Thinking of ability to handle changing surfaces and twig/pebble encounters etc.
(N+1 justification incoming)

Wigan on Weds was another good session it takes a while to get going but by end I was doing better crossovers on the anti-c direction. Clockwise is still a mission.
Also rolling for longer on single foot both side, I'd not call it balancing on one leg quite yet but it is getting closer.
Session tonight so will see where things are at.

I believe so and more efficient effort wise, hence covering more mileage. I also want the challenge of uneven ground.
Tactile paving at pedestrian crossings for instance. I’ll have to hop over the potholes on the road though 😂 and most customer reviews have been
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
However, on the streets they will get alot of punishment, wear and tear. I will need to pay attention with wheel replacements / switching middle and front wheels was recommended from a buyer.
My recent purchase has a wheel hardness rating of 82A which is very high, hopefully I will manage.
Also I read that these skates are prone to dial wire lace breakages if set too tight, the type of wire lacing you find on some cycling shoes.. so I’ll need to have spare laces and tools when out and about for roadside repairs.
Guidance on wheels
the harder the wheels, the less grip they have. In general, hard wheels have smaller contact surface compared to softer ones of the same profile. It is worth noting that this does not scale in linear fashion and level of perceived grip differs for people of different weight or skating styles.
harder wheels are faster. Smaller contact surface means less friction and roll resistance.
harder wheels dampen vibrations much worse. Skating on uneven and rough surfaces with wheels of a lower hardness is much more comfortable.
So for me, it’ll be Bauer XL quad skates with wheel hardness of 62A for indoor and at the Victoria Park hangout / muck about.
And the 3x3 inlines for big distance commuting, training and street rollling.

Good summary, thanks. I reckon the indoor / outdoor pairs might be right for me, plus inline is like another whole new hobby to hyperfocus on too, right?

• #121
Agreed, it’s a bit like owning a fixie and geared road bike.

Seen some bauer rs v.little use at a decent price on ebay, bid might skyrocket but watching, more hockey than street but could be fun to play about & learn on plus sizing should be same as my quads.

Thanks! Wish I was purchasing these, than attempting to get my dominant hand working again. Man this is gonna be a long recovery.
I previously skated across town on a Sunday with the inline crew from Hyde park. Their sound system was all radio linked and all very friendly. I struggled on my quads and had every intention of getting some inlines. Definitely still hope to one day. Being able to do literally anything with right hand is current priority.Nice to read about your progression rhb. So lovely the steadier you feel and the flow when you're in it is beautiful

Thanks. Spent tonight's session working on one foot rolling, finding my balance so I'm neutral not on pulling to one side. Hard but progress again. One of the better watched my left crossover says it is reasonable. Need to learn when turning right too as that unlocks other stuff. I like the layers of progress.
Tried a t-stop and nearly landed on my face so that can wait a while longer. Ditto going backwards, a complete mind fuck to even think about.

Hope to go Wigan on Weds again.
P.s. the bauer rs inline went for £92 which was above my limit.
You broke your "right doll"? :)
