  • He is, and it's nice to get someone's opinion on HiFi gear that -

    • doesn't listen to jazz
    • talks about the music they like
    • reviews affordable gear
  • Speaking about Cheap Audio Man. Bought a cheap SMSL class-d per his recommendations. Fun little piece but wasn't really feeling it together with my old speakers so picked up this Technics the other day. More pleasant pairing.

  • Yeah that's gorgeous.

  • Nice, gotta love a VU. What's in your wooden box?

  • Really happy with it. Perfect mix of vintage/modern looking imo.

  • Right? It's an old ohm-meter from the Swedish Armed Forces. Just an odd item. Not hooked up to anything.

  • Right! Yeah I've got a vintage technics setup myself, with all the VU meters! The ohm meter is an interesting bit of kit.

  • I picked up a second hand Q100 for £50 that needed refoaming. Repair done over the weekend and fired it up at lunchtime, it is a bit of a beast!!

    Thanks for the tip.

  • You're welcome!
    (Sorry eskays neighbours...)

  • Needs earthing somewhere. Maybe on that pre amp.

  • These just arrived from the 90s, and they're so effing heavy. A tweeter, a mid, 2 bass drivers and 2 passive radiators all tucked into bookshelf sized box. Will see what they sound like tomorrow as the kids already in bed.

  • upgraded my portable hifi stuff finally after months of crackle and sound quality loss at the jack - mp3 player interface on my cowon plenue d2, it needed a wiggle to get the connections right and if you hit a bump in the road while cycling the connection / quality could change for the worse, quite annoying

my grado sr60's also died on me after probably 10 years of use and abuse. wanted to find a cowon but seems like they're just not available here so went for the sony NW-A306 walkman, https://www.sony.co.uk/walkman/products/nw-a306 then picked a pair of grado sr80x's, the grados are gradually wearing in and sounding better each time i put them on. think they're run in now. it's a good pairing to my cloth ears, there a bit too much tech on the sony, wifi connectivity blue tooth techy stuff etc but once i got to grips with it and set up a decent graphics equaliser level i'm pretty happy, haven't tried a side by side listen with the old plenue but will do at some point to see if i can hear any significant difference, i doubt there'll be much
added a 128GB memory card so now can put about 2400 cd quality flac tracks on it, could only get about 50 tracks with out the upgraded memory, bit of a con but hey ho
and it does have an annoying habit of freezing occasionally, with requires a restart which is a 1-2 min process, not really to sure why maybe problems with the ripping process

    but overall i'll give the new combo an 8.5 - 9 / 10
happy to have full hi-fidelity on the move once again

  • I have my rel subwoofer on tennis balls.
    Looks fun and maybe helps.

  • Interesting, I may give it a go!

  • I replaced my twenty-year-old SR-60 (cable failed, will look at replacing the cable one day) with a pair of SR-80x and like them. For portable audio (Sony Minidisc) I also use the Sony EX15LP/AP. You can get them for under a tenner, super portable wired earbuds that sound way better than they have the right to for the price.

Prefer the Minidisc/EX15 combo to iPhone/AirPods Pro for sound, the latter wins out for convenience though.

  • x post from the headphones thread but seeing as there is headphone chat in here:

Overall I find myself slightly disappointed with B&W PX7 (previous version to current).

Soundwise, there isn't anything awful about them, just a bit muddy and lacking presence. Maybe i expected too much from a moderately expensive pair of headphones using bluetooth from a phone.

Also I find the headband uncomfortable.

I wonder how much is bt and how much more i'd get with different headphones using the same source? Looking at ditching bt and getting another portable source, it all gets a bit complex.

  • They're Technics SB - M300 speakers. They've got great separation and presence, but they've not got that great bass response TBH (certainly not enough for modern dub), but they are only a bookshelf speaker.

  • Anyone heard the Graham audio Chartwell LS6? this is just idle musings but once the DIY has ended and fiscal/work stuff sorted i’m looking to indulge myself and sorting out the Hi-Fi which will be done in stages and likely over a few years.
I have a pair of stands made from heavy gauge box section/plate that were made for me by my father, they are of serious mass and not the pressed steel of the usual atacama stuff, would like to keep using these if possible but some of the standmounts are a bit tall from the likes of Harbeth/Spendor but the LS6 looks like the right size and has bass.
Aesthetics are a consideration so ugly modern floorstanders are out of the question however good they sound so no Bowers & Wilkins or Mourdant Short, I’m not after an LS3/5A either.
Endgame is hopefully Naim 72/140, turntable better than my rega P3, £300-£500 MC cart, ugly streaming box hidden away and a pair of speakers that have more bass than my current Leema Xero’s, most of this will be ex-dem/used as there’s plenty of audiophiles that can’t resist something new as they chase the holy grail.
No idea if the Naim/BBC combo will work but I guess cartridge choice will be key.
Any other small box but bigger than an LS3/5a that should be on my radar?

  • Falcon M10 probably worth a look. They’ve got a bit of BBC DNA about them.

  • Hadn’t seen those, mainly because their website is difficult to see what’s on offer. will watch this when i have finished work:

  • I built my Ojas kit - really like them, not had a huge amount of time to sit in front of them, and need to figure out the stand situation, boxes are too low and not the right material, but had fun building them

very different sound profile to the LS50, but similar frequency response range

  • After looking at a few cheap DACs which may, or may not have changed my life - something started niggling at the back of my mind... I had a quick dig through the settings on the CCA i'm using to stream most of my stuff to, turns out I didn't have the "Full dynamic range" setting enabled on that one for some reason... I do now, and as a result i'm no longer looking for a cheap DAC to change my life.

  • $2350 for DIY speakers  Worth it?
