I’d agree. Castleton road is boring and busy, the Sheffield Road up out of Hathersage is a double whammy of a bastard climb and busy with cunty drivers. I’d be inclined to endure a bit of the Castleton road before skipping up to Hope Valley Ice Cream via the farm track, then Birley Lane, Cottis Side, The Dale and then down to join the route at Fox House via the Burbage bridleway (which is lush).
Bit of extra riding, bit of extra climbing, but way nicer / quieter lanes, you get to ride under Stanage which is always immense, there’s good ice cream available, and you get a bit of extra gravel in the Burbage descent which is great on a grav bike.

I'd look to avoid the road Shatton through Hathersage etc., boring and sometimes heavy traffic, others might say it is fine that know the area better. That first climb of the day is great :)
