  • I’m after a frame to build as a winter fixed, so want clearance for reasonable tyres (32c?) and space for guards etc. but a paddywagon type thing would also suit.

I’m in Leeds so would be for post probably.

  • Bump

  • Genesis day one is a good option if you want clearance.

  • Yeah, that’s not a bad shout

  • I've got 35 with guards on mine at the moment (rim brake with v brakes). 38 or 40 without I reckon. No toe overlap on my 54 frame.

  • You after disc or rim, or doesn’t it matter?

  • Open to either

  • Basically I’m currently deliberating about wether to keep my Day One (I’ve barely used it since building it up) or move it on. Do you need any other bits, like wheels?

    Mine is here

  • I’ve got a rim brake fixed wheelset and other bits and bobs, but it’s all up in the air tbh.

  • Do you have pictures of this?

@Nef why are you building this? Enjoyed following your Brother project and assumed it would cover fixed winter duties

Because I'm now too precious about the brother. And I don't want to ruin it commuting through winter on gritted roads. It's not a bike to only ride in the dry, but the thought of letting it get crusted in salt does make me cringe.

Although through the process of looking for a frame, I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't just buy something with gears for winter (which amusingly is the opposite to the normal convention of building a fixed/ss winter hack).

  • thank you. I misread and thought you'd managed to cram those tyres and mudguards in a Kona PW and I hadn't seen that done before. clearances do look much better on the day one.

@Nef fair enough. dangers of building a nice bike! I think the guards on the brother would keep the worst of winter at bay, and using it might be better than building two bikes that are so similar. good luck in your search!

  • Annoyingly, I just typed out a long CP post, which seems to have disappeared. But I’m still trying to figure out which direction to take this in.

I’m a bit split. The prospect of my hilly 11 mile commute in foul weather on a fixed gear is a bit grim - it’s hard enough in nice weather.
But I could probably also do with a winter friendly bike, and a geared bike is probably a bit handier and versatile.

There’s things like the Genesis day one Alfine which is somewhere in the middle.

  • Somewhat poorly listed 853 Day One with Di2 Alfine. Might be pretty close to what you're after? I was very tempted myself, spoke to the seller and said he'd do £425 in cash. Collection only from Deptford but I'm just round the corner and up in Leeds in a few weeks so could figure that out.

  • I did see that. There’s an 8 speed alfine in North Shields for £350 as well.

I’ll definitely have a think on the 853. It’s a very kind offer to pick it up (and pretty tempting at £425). Just need to have a dig around and see if I’ve got any wares I can flog to raise the funds!

  • Just found this pic of another 853. Solid inspo!

  • I'm very tempted myself! If it wasn't a crazy expensive month I'd be all over it.

  • Well, whoops.
Bought this for a bargain £110.
