The standard one right through the middle of the forks seems a lot less likely to work loose than one mounted just to an M5 screw running vertically. The load on a mudguard that would go there would be distributed a lot more widely.
I just know I start with the best intentions of checking things haven't worked loose and then tend to forget.
(already broken one of the rivnut fork cage mounts due to being lazy about checking tightness)
